Hey everyone it’s been awhile since we’ve done an introduction on here & know we have some newer followers. So here we go with a few pictures to show as well…(sorry it is a long one 😬)
Gessner’s Windy View Farms is located in the hills of Wayland, NY. It’s is now ran & operated by Kristine (me) & my husband, Justin Shutt along the side of my father, Jack Gessner, who likes to call himself “The man behind the scenes!” Jack, my dad, grew up on a dairy farm just down over the hill of where we are currently located. Him & my mom, Donna bought the farm we now call Gessner’s Windy View Farm back in 1984 from my mom’s family. My parents while both working off the farm, my mom as a full time X-ray & CT tech, and my dad working full time for a highway department still managed to make improvements & farm the land, with crop production, hay, & raising dairy replacements.
Ten years later down the road I came along to add to the busy lifestyle they had. With my love for the farm & animals growing, when I was around 9 years old my parents got me involved in Steuben County 4H. My first 2 years I raised, showed, & sold market hogs at the county fair before getting into beef cattle. With getting into cattle the idea was selling them when I got old enough to help pay for a college education. Clearly they all didn’t get sold and here we are today with around 100 head of beef cattle up on the hill. We showed just breeding stock at the fairs for a couple of years. Then getting older I got into the market animals at the fair selling a steer or two every year. With it always being hard to let them go after the auction, I was always taught that it is ok to be sad to see them go, but that is what they are raised for & we give them the best life they have while they are here with us.
Fast forward down the road to when I got old enough & graduated from high school & aged out of 4H, we still had the herd on the hill. Justin & I got together sharing our interest in farming together. Selling & marketing mostly breeding stock & selling feeders off in the fall. While I was working & going to nursing school, a lot of people I worked with always asked why we never sold our beef, people wanted to try it. So we kept a few steers to sell by quarter & halves to people who were interested. My parents had done that before in the past, but unfortunately it can be very discouraging when people say they want to do it and then when it comes time people have backed out, and that is a large amount of meat to try and sell last minute. Learning from the past, we then started taking deposits to reserve your orders. After then doing a few animals that way & people really loving the meat we started doing more & more that way. But, we also understand that to buy a quarter or half of beef you need the freezer space & that is a larger chunk of money for someone to dish out at once. And with some peoples homes only being 1 or 2 people that was a large amount of meat for them to get. So then we started looking into what we had to do to be able to sell individual cuts of our Beef!
With us selling Beef for quarters & halves that doesn’t have to be USDA inspected but, you aren’t able to get it back and sell it by the individual cuts, if someone wants a couple pounds of ground beef or a steak here or there to try it. So we then found a butcher shop that is all USDA certified so we sent a couple steers to the butcher and did our cutting instructions, came up with our prices & started selling it that way. We then got involved in doing farmer’s markets in Dansville & in Wayland in getting our meat out there. This has led to people being able to try our beef before they commit to a quarter or half or they just keep buying it by the individual cut. With Justin & I both working off the farm full time, just as my parents did it was hard to find the time to keep going to the farmer’s markets. And I really love where our farm is, with the gorgeous view & watching the cattle grazing on the hill I wanted to be able to share that with our customers. So with it being a dream of mine to come true, back in June of 2022 we decided to open up a beef store where you can come & get your beef & see right where the beef comes from.
Now, Justin is working on the farm full time, I am still working as a nurse full time. We’ve done some upkeep on our older barns, and built on, we’ve added on to the beef store. We’ve hired some help, my friend Jenna to help with store hours on Saturdays. But most importantly our family has grown Justin & I have 2 little boys, Dalton & Tripp. They are farm boys through and through. We love being able to raise them in this environment and way of life and hope to pass it on to the next generation one day.
Currently, we are supplying the beef at the store all raised by us, only leaving the farm to go to the butcher shop. We have a local place we have found that has been supplying us with chicken, in Geneva, NY. Pork we have raised or purchased from youth at the Steuben County Fair in Bath, NY. You can also find our beef at ROC BBQ supply in Henrietta, Hillside Gardens in Springwater, & Ol’ Thyme Farm in Wayland.
Our farm store is open Saturdays
10am~4pm or by appointment. If you stop up to visit or buy something you won’t see just a farm with house, barns, tractors, and cows. You will see a way of life. You will see our way of life. You will see passion & hard work. You will see 2 little boys growing & playing (possibly having a meltdown 😅). You will see 3 generations on the land. You will see a small business and a families dream. You will see thankful farmers who appreciate every order of meat, recommendation, and visit to the farm. Thank you to everyone for your continued support! ❤️
