Oak Haven Equine Retirement Facility

Oak Haven Equine Retirement Facility Equine Retirement Facility Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, you will find Oak Haven Equine Retirement and Boarding Facility.

Over forty stately Oak trees dapple the gently rolling pastures and black board fence weaves a secure border around this picturesque little family farm. Oak Haven has been a life-long dream that finally came to fruition by the need for a safe, slower-paced environment for horses who are either in a transitional, rehabilitational period or easing into retirement. We have three darling retirees ours

elves, one of whom is “G AreYouKidding” Rebecca’s beloved gray OTTB. "G" is a War Horse with 68 starts and earning over $120,000. He is transitioning from almost 8 years on the track as a stallion to the much slower pace of a pleasure hunter gelding. This is what makes Oak Haven special. We are truly fostering an atmosphere of safety, tranquility, comfort and care, and ultimately horses just enjoying being horses. Our main priority is for Oak Haven to be a sanctuary for all of our clients and residents. Our facility is small-scale, charming, and well-loved. Oak Haven will be limited to 8-10 horses and ponies, so you will not just be a number in a herd. Any horse on the property is treated as if it is our own. You will be a part of our family, and you and your horse will be treated as such. We will also update you with videos and pictures, especially if you are a long distance boarder. While retirement boarding will be our focus, we are not limited to that alone. Oak Haven has a full-size grass arena and a full course of jumps. Other amenities include: Tack room, cross ties, wash area, trailer parking, automatic water, 26' by 12' run-in, and a 4-stall barn. We are currently growing, so there are several more amenities centered on horse and rider that are being developed, including additional run-ins, a round-pen, cross country fences, and additional individual turn-out paddocks. We are very excited for you and your beloved horse to be a part of this journey with us. We proudly use New Country Organic Feed but we also can offer Triple Crown, Legends, or Southern States feeds. All hay is an orchard grass mix, either grown on site or purchased locally; alfalfa hay available upon request. Please contact us for additional information.

So pretty!

This is why your turn does not come from pulling on the rein. Note the riders hand and leg position and hip angle in each sketch. Note the development of the horses muscles in each sketch. Note the shape of the horse in each sketch. A truly supple, truly bent horse is working through their entire body. It is OUR job as the rider to guide the horse to become soft, supple, and through in all movements.

Rider one is pulling the nose around, and trying to push the haunches in, with a following outside rein offering the horse no balance, and a hardly supportive inside leg to wrap around. This has created a rigid, stiff horse that will surely be back sore, weak in the hind end, with front end bulk in all the wrong places. This horse has every opportunity, and will likely be so uncomfortable that it will try every time, to run out of his right shoulder.

Rider two is pushing the horse from his inside leg to his outside rein. The outside rein is providing a balance point for the horse, allowing him to be both comfortable and willing to carry himself. Because the riders rein is supportive and blocking the shoulder, the horse can not blow out the shoulder, and can only become truly bent along the entire length of the spine.

In order to build the athlete you want, and to allow your horse the opportunity to have a long, successful, and most importantly SOUND career, it is important to understand how we ride, even in seemingly simple tasks such as the walk or trotting circles, is effecting each muscle in your horses body. Not all muscle is good muscle!

Wow! And that smile!

I usually fire off one shot per jump...but at this particular moment, I had a feeling that one wasn't going to cut it...Carly Anthony didn't disappoint. Here she is on her 9yr old mare flying over the standards! And look at that smile on her face - congrats on a great ride and a 3rd place finish in tonight's $130,000 CSI4* Grand Prix!

Some of the REAL 52 Thoroughbreds! Where are they now?

Every year, the "52 Thoroughbreds need homes" post bubbles up like clockwork. Most horse people rarely fall for the outdated cry for help on social media anymore, even if non-horsey family members and friends continue to keep it circulating year after year. But few out there have ever met any of...
