WPS Education Farm A community facing learning lab, integrating curriculum delivery into market farm food production.

The Mission of the Waynesboro Education Farm is to be a community facing learning lab engaging the development of the whole child and their families. We do this through integrating curriculum delivery into farm to table food production. We believe this experience creates core memories for students that operationalize standards of learning in a way that ensures later recall. While our product or yield on the farm is student achievement, we also produce a large amount of organic food for delivery to school cafeterias and various community pantries.

It’s so cool when vegetables cross pollinate in season, corn seems to be especially susceptible. The butcher corn plus the blue carriage corn made this purple and gold little giant corn! Anybody want to do a science lesson on dominate and recessive traits?

Update on our willow dome. Two years ago, we worked with our friends ShireFolk Farm Emilie Gooch Tweardy and Shenandoah Permaculture Institute to secure and install a few hundred willow cuttings to grow and form into an outdoor small group classroom. It’s finally taking shape. Next up stumps for seating and our stump school will be complete. Small living spaces like this not only enchant the garden but also provides shade for focused brainwork!

We are finding that the farm is just a giant sandbox full of organic fidgets of every shape size texture and color. The engaging educational value is endless. From math to science to social studies we’ve gotten enormous curriculum delivery opportunities out of this years corn crop. And of course as a complimentary outcome the students are understanding the value and source of foods while developing the life skills to grow, process, and prepare. Our goal is Virginia standards, our outcomes are dynamic and broad! Holistic education for the win! Waynesboro Public Schools next up! Tortillas from field to plate!

Been quiet but busy at the farm. Last Friday we collaborated with Mr faircloths middle school class on a salsa entrepreneurship unit. This is just the first step of many. 6 students joined us in FarmVille at the Virginia Food Works prince edward county cannery. The students went through the entire process of making a Batch of salsa from waynesboroeducationfarm products learning about food safety and scaling production all under the direction of our friend and chef -Audrey -in an inspected kitchen. Stay tuned as the crew develops the labels and a plan for sales!
