WPS Education Farm

WPS Education Farm A community facing learning lab, integrating curriculum delivery into market farm food production.

The Mission of the Waynesboro Education Farm is to be a community facing learning lab engaging the development of the whole child and their families. We do this through integrating curriculum delivery into farm to table food production. We believe this experience creates core memories for students that operationalize standards of learning in a way that ensures later recall. While our product or yi

eld on the farm is student achievement, we also produce a large amount of organic food for delivery to school cafeterias and various community pantries.

We have picked up some more followers recently. We thought it would be a good time to reintroduce folks to our goals on the farm. Follow along this school year as we demonstrate how we approach agriculture as a classroom Waynesboro Public Schools

We love the idea of our students feeding themselves as much as our students feeding their neighbors. There’s nothing like waynesboro education farm produce being distributed throughout waynesboro public school cafeterias.

Corn is a new crop to the education farm this year. We added it for several reasons - including how many Virginia standards link to the crop. But mostly it’s about the tortillas. This variety is called bloody butcher and is a field corn that can grow up to fifteen feet! Mr.B is 6’ 4’’ for scale.! This year we will be drying the corn and grinding into a corn flour that we can use all year round to make tortillas for our famous farm fish tacos!

Flowers. It’s amazing what flowers do for the farm. From attracting pollinators to confusing pests and of course just plain being pretty. We are reaching a point in the farms ecosystem where we barely need to plant them anymore. They just throw seed and we let them grow wherever they pop up! This bouquet is getting ready for the front office . Our planting patterns are all about interconnected polycultures around here. In other words diversity is key at !

It’s mid August - school is back and the tomatoes are pumping. Meanwhile we are already looking forward to sept 2 - our next volunteer night. We are dubbing this evening our tomatopalooza. Chef aaron of Aaron Gardner will be on farm cooking up tomato centric dishes while all who attend will get to taste test all of the varieties we grew this year. Join us that night from 5-7 pm. Dinner is at 6. To count down the event I’m going to highlight a few of our favorites from this season. Check these out! This variety is a cherry tomato that goes by the name Mochi. Is quickly become one of our favorites due to its thick skin and eating experience. Eating one of these is like eating a tomato flavored gummy bear!
