πŸ‘ How Often Do Your Animals Need Sheared?

One thing many people don't realize is that every fiber animal has a different schedule.

At Bauman's Fiber Farm:

πŸ‘ Valais Blacknose Sheep – At least 3 times a year. We typically get 5–6 inches of wool each shearing. Our show sheep may go 6 months between shearings and can grow an incredible 12–16 inches of wool! Even breeds crossed with them need sheared 3-4x a year.

πŸ‘ Gotland Sheep – 2 times a year.

πŸ¦™ Llamas – 1 time a year.

πŸ‚ Yaks – 1 time a year.

🐰 Angora Rabbits – About every 8 weeks, all year long.

That's a lot of fiberβ€”and a lot of work!

Every breed grows fiber differently, which is one reason we love raising such a variety of animals. Each one brings something unique to the fiber world.

πŸ‘ Who Here Knows What a Sheep Is? πŸ€”

Seems like a silly question, right?

Most people would point to a fluffy white animal in a field and say, "That's a sheep!"

But did you know there are over 1,000 breeds of sheep around the world?

Some have wool.
Some shed their coats.
Some have horns.
Some don't.
Some are raised for meat.
Some for milk.
Some for beautiful fiber.

In fact, many of the sheep we share on our page don't look anything like what most people picture when they hear the word "sheep."

So let's have some fun...

πŸ‘‡ When you think of a sheep, what breed comes to mind first?

And bonus points if you've ever heard of:
πŸ‘ Valais Blacknose
πŸ‘ Gotland
πŸ‘ Wensleydale
πŸ‘ Katahdin
Ones we raise

Let's see how many sheep experts we have following along!

🚨 A Friendly Cybersecurity Reminder 🚨

New scams!

I recently discovered that my email account had been compromised.

Thankfully, I caught it, but it was a good reminder that this can happen to anyoneβ€”individuals, farms, small businesses, and large companies alike.

One important lesson I learned: before changing passwords or requesting password reset codes, make sure no unauthorized person is being copied on your emails. If someone has been added as a Reply-To address, forwarding address, or is being automatically copied on messages, they may also receive password reset emails or verification codes intended for you.

Before you change passwords:

βœ… Check your email settings for forwarding addresses.
βœ… Check your Reply-To settings.
βœ… Review email filters and rules.
βœ… Remove any unknown email addresses connected to your account.
βœ… Then change your password and enable two-factor authentication (2FA).

Also remember to:

βœ… Use a strong, unique password for your email account.
βœ… Be cautious of links and attachments, even when they appear to come from someone you know.
βœ… Regularly review account security settings and connected devices.

Your email account is often the key to many of your other accounts, so keeping it secure is one of the most important steps you can take online.

I'm sharing this because if it happened to me, it can happen to anyone. Take a few minutes today to check your accountsβ€”you may save yourself a lot of stress later.

Stay safe out there! πŸ”’πŸ’»

πŸ‘ What's the Best Way to Keep Livestock Healthy?

Most people think the answer is medications, supplements, fancy equipment, or expensive testing.

In our experience, the best tool is simply paying attention.

Put your hands on your animals.

For wool sheep, feel their backs regularly. You can often tell if they're losing weight before it's visible to the eye.

Learn their personalities.

Are they eating as much as normal?
Are they coming up to greet you?
Are they moving around with the flock?
Or are they standing off by themselves and laying around more than usual?

Small changes can be the first sign that something isn't right.

If you notice a change, don't ignore it.

βœ”οΈ Check a f***l sample.
βœ”οΈ Send a sample to your veterinarian.
βœ”οΈ Learn to use a microscope and monitor parasite loads yourself.
βœ”οΈ Consult your vet for a physical exam or bloodwork if needed.
βœ”οΈ Sometimes a nutrient drench can help determine if they're simply lacking energy or minerals.

The biggest lesson we've learned is this:

Healthy livestock starts with knowing what's normal.

When you know your animals and their daily behavior, you can often catch problems earlyβ€”before they become emergencies.

Whether you're raising sheep, cattle, goats, llamas, yaks, or any other livestock, observation is one of the most valuable skills a stockman can have.

Because sometimes the difference between life and death is noticing that something just isn't quite right.

πŸ‘ Did You Know Sheep Need Haircuts?

Most people assume sheep naturally shed their wool.

The truth is many modern wool breeds can't shed enough wool on their own and depend on humans to shear them.

If left unshorn, wool can continue growing year after year, causing problems with heat stress, mobility, cleanliness, and overall health.

Shearing isn't just about harvesting woolβ€”it's an important part of responsible sheep care.

Some breeds, like Katahdins and other hair sheep, naturally shed and usually don't need shearing. Others, such as Merino, Valais Blacknose, Gotland, Romney, and many wool breeds, require regular shearing to stay healthy and comfortable.

πŸ‘ Fun Fact:
A sheep's wool can grow several inches every year depending on the breed.

πŸ‘‡ Before today, did you know sheep actually need haircuts?

WOOL ISN'T JUST FOR WINTER πŸ‘β˜€οΈ

One of the biggest myths about wool is that it's only useful when it's cold outside.

In reality, wool is one of nature's best temperature regulators.

It helps keep you warm in the winter...

But it can also help keep you cool in the summer.

Wool naturally breathes, wicks moisture away from your body, and helps regulate temperature better than many synthetic fabrics.

That's why hikers, athletes, and outdoor enthusiasts often choose wool year-round.

The funny thing is...

Many people happily wear plastic-based clothing in the summer but think wool would be too hot.

Nature figured this out long before we did.

So let's hear it...

Would you wear wool in the summer?

πŸ‘‡ Yes or No?
