In the field we've been talking about when we think frost will come this year. The consensus? Hopefully tomorrow. 😅

Dropped off this piece today at Haywood County Arts Council and it is my most ambitious piece to date. I bought, sanded, and stained a 15" bar stool top. I made the mistake of painting the piece BEFORE cutting and mounting the paper, so I made a panicked trip to the store last night to grab jute wrapped wire to cover the icky edges. I kind of like the result, even if it's not what I envisioned.

I included pictures of most of the steps of the creation process, including the ugly underpainting phase. I forgot to photograph what it looked like after the UV resistant sealant spray dried (kind of horrifying), but I've got some closeups of the shine from the cold wax that went on after. While the sealant spray helps protect from fading in the sun, the wax protects it from water and dust so it's safe without the protection of glass. It also adds just a lovely depth and shine to the piece. I also used archival, acid-free glue to attach the paper and the jute to the wood (the raw, unstained side of the wood) so the integrity of the paper and pigments should be safe over time.

My biggest mistake though? I completely forgot to sign the painting when I finished! I realized that after the wax finished curing. I signed using a permanent marker fine liner, and it rubbed right off the wax. So here's my digital record that this piece is indeed mine, you heard it here first. And probably only here. 😅

The Don't Be Square exhibit opens this Friday, so make sure you go check out all the incredible art celebrating everything BUT right angles!

Love the bird song while watching all the pollinators at the zinnia research plot.
The research project is going well so far and I'm excited to start seeing some interesting trends in the data and w**d pressure in the beds. We got the next 1300+ plants planted out yesterday for a total of roughly 2600+ plants spread out over 8 randomized blocks. That's a lot of flowers, and even more w**ds!
I need to put together a saved stories thingy since I've been sharing updates in stories but not here. So what questions do you have for me so I can answer them here and in the soon-to-be-made saved story highlight?
Also shout out to my incredible crew for keeping me sane every week while w**ding! I cherish you to the moon and back Anna, , Leo, and Nova!

I had an absolute BLAST doing a live demonstration today at ! I was absolutely blown away by all of the compliments, words of support, shared love of art, and questions about my style and techniques. I guess it's maybe about time I made a website for my art? For now, this piece, 'Abstract Amanita Muscaria #3' is available and ready for a new home. Let me know if you're interested!

First time doing a sudo architectural painting and I'm inordinately pleased with the results. This is the back of our barn. Should I do more of these?

How gorgeous are these 'Dr. Alexander Fleming' blooms?!
Fun fact: my first week working at a few seasons ago they had a 'Dr. Alexander Fleming' plant with the most perfect bloom on it. I decided it would be the first thing I bought with my first paycheck, just so I could cut the bloom and bring it inside the house. That's exactly what I did. That little plant brought me so much joy until I killed it by digging it up to relocate it and managed to forget it in the garage for 4 months. So I bought and planted a bunch of replacement bare roots two years ago and here we are. 😅
Do you have a similar loved it then killed it plant story?

My second semester of grad school ended Friday and I'm in recovery mode now. Tomorrow will be the first day of physically beginning work on my thesis research which I'm really excited to share with y'all. It involves 1600 zinnias. Need I say more?!?!?
