The only other gene edited pigs I could possibly be more excited about is ones I don't have to castrate 😆 this is so awesome. I truly hope consumers can understand and embrace the science behind this. As a farmer who has raised pigs battling with PRRS, the peace of mind I would have to never have to worry about breaking with it again is honestly impossible to describe.
'Using gene editing technology, Genus PIC deleted a very small portion of the pig's DNA that encodes a protein that the virus uses to enter and infect the pig's cells. With this small gene edit, the pig is resistant to PRRS, as the virus is unable to enter the cells and replicate. Like humans inherit traits from their parents, the pig’s offspring will inherit the PRRS-resistant trait.'
'While the disease-resistant technology is new, pork from PRRS-resistant pigs is no different from the pork consumers already know and love, except for resistance to the infection caused by the PRRS virus, Genus PIC noted. This was confirmed by a recent study that reviewed 97 meat quality and composition data points.'
Approval of gene-editing technology for use in the U.S. food supply chain is a major step forward for Genus PIC, which now looks toward U.S. commercialization.
