It’s been a bummer week at Out in Jupiter Farm. First, one of our outdoor kitties has gone missing. The first night he didn’t show up for dinner I thought he had smelled the flea & tick medicine on his brother and was hiding from me. I left the medicine out until I could catch him. Then he didn’t show the next day. The day after that we got a text from our neighbor; her cat has also gone missing. We’re still looking and checking the Ring camera, but our hopes are diminishing. He wasn’t one to wander and always stayed right in the yard.

The big storm that came through Wednesday evening took out the supports for our beans and tomatoes. Our garden (at least what the squash bugs left us) is on the ground right now. We’re hoping to get it shored back up this weekend, but d**g so without breaking vines is a bit of a long shot.

Yesterday I discovered that the food on the top shelf of the freezer was a bit soft. Hoping the door hadn’t closed completely I rearranged a few things and checked it this morning. More partially thawed things. I resolved to save it and brought in big coolers and bags of ice. Trish ordered up a new freezer. I was going to cook one of the casseroles for supper. I took the lid off to check for ice crystals and found mold. I checked a couple other containers …mold. Dammit! Apparently it has been cycling off and on, thawing and refreezing. I couldn’t trust any of it, so goodbye steaks, goodbye turkeys, goodbye goat cheese, goodbye chicken, goodbye precooked casseroles and garden vegetable soup. 🥲. I ordered one of those monitors that signals your phone if the temperature gets too low.
At least I hadn’t put away anything from this year’s garden (whatever we might get off the ground 😒). Right now I just want to sit in the dark and eat cookies.
