Inoculation is a beneficial bacteria that has a symbiotic relationship with your plant’s roots. For soybean Rhizobium japonicum takes atmospheric nitrogen in the soil and converts it to usable nitrogen by the plant in exchange for carbohydrates. A healthy active root module where this occurs will be pinkish inside where it contains leghemaglobin. You simply sprinkle active live inoculant on the seed and plant it. This process makes sure the correct bacteria is present and that no additional nitrogen is needed. This not only saves on fertilizer costs, but also increases yields especially in late plantings. There are many other reasons to apply inoculant yearly such as low or high pH, waterlogged or drought soils, length of crop rotation, etc. Other legume species are clover, alfalfa, beans, and peas. www.eagleseed.com

Planting season is here. Always check seed depth and plant into moisture. I prefer to not plant right before a rain as crusting can occur and reduce the stand count. Good seed to soil contact is critical to the germination process of seeds as they imbibe moisture to start the process. Planting in dust is risky but can be successful if rain occurs and the seed is still viable. www.eagleseed.com

Soybean plants come in all shapes and sizes depending on their genetic background. In our soybean breeding program we develop all types for high yield grain production or high tonnage forage production. Soybean is photoperiod sensitive and rated by maturity group(000-10). We do not describe maturity group in days like corn hybrids as it changes from what latitude it is planted at and the planting date. Many farmers have shifted to early planting of early maturity soybean for an early harvest that is focused on grain production. For forage and food plots we plant late maturity soybeans to maximize plant biomass while still producing grain. Our forage types can have 2-3 times as many branches with much larger leaves which is needed to handle heavy grazing by animals. This photo compares the two types side by side. www.eagleseed.com

Cereal grain seed production is progressing nicely. These wheat and oat fields will be harvested for seed in June and we will no-till plant early maturity soybeans for seed. Double cropping as this is called works well for growing high quality soybean seed. Earlier planting will typically yield better but the germination rate can be lower. We have a strict protocol for planting soybeans for seed compared to maximizing grain production. Heat stress at flowering and seed fill can reduce the germination rate but affect the grain quality.
