Soon it will be time for cherries; the black tomatoes are "Brad's Atomic Grape", a variety from 2017 that neither of us has grown, and we're really excited to see them coming along!

While doing some cleanup in part of the h**p field this weekend, we found a stalk from last year's plants.

It was dry, and kind of hollowed out, and we were able to separate some of the deteriorated outer layer to reveal the strong fibers just under the surface.

With only a 15" or so piece of stalk, we were able to quickly twist the fibers into a slim bit of "rope" that didn't break until we gave it a sharp jerk, with the length extended and quite a bit of force.

Cannabis is such a remarkable plant, with uses from nutritional to industrial, combined with a rapid growth rate and low resource consumption. It's really a rockstar of the ag world.

Today was one of those perfect days, I think, that people imagine when they think of farms and the country. Brilliant sun and deep green shade, with the vast cloud shadows moving over the fields. Everything is blooming, the forest is alive with birds, and the wind smells of earth and water.
We have our first tomato fruits-- on two of our Purple Cherokee plants.

It feels strange and not right that some things keep going on, even as the world has stark reminders that things have never been right for some of the people in it.

We're finishing up planting at the farm right now, but this year is different. In response to the pandemic and the accompanying threat to the food supply chain, we've switched to vegetable production. We're not a large farm, but our hope is that we can help be part of the effort to keep people fed during this time.

If we can pull it off, we'll keep our family out of the stream of consumption, as well as be able to provide produce for other families in need and for local food pantries.

Spring is coming to the Cannon River Valley. It's all here, all growing. Soon we will be too. 💚💜
