We will Not be at the Minden Market this Tuesday.
After a week of dealing with a vet emergency and heading to a livestock show on Wednesday, we decided that self care this week looks like choosing to not overextend.

We will be back to the market next week!

Harvested pinyon from trees on the farm today and started an oil infusion. This is the basis for my pine salve. In 6 weeks, the infusion will be strained and the oil kept in the refrigerator to preserve its freshness. As new pine salve batches are made, this infused oil will be mixed with other natural ingredients to create a salve that is wonderful for chapped skin, cracked fingers and heals, dry cuticles, and sunburnt lips.

The turkey project restarts! This time we have a rare breed of turkey called a Midget White. They are built and look just like the broad breasted whites that are the common thanksgiving turkey ( but can’t breed naturally.) Midget whites are smaller and thus can breed naturally. These poults are from a small breeder who selected for size, standards, and temperament. We got to visit the adults and fell in love.
These poults are 1.5 weeks old and average only 4 oz. They are more docile than the big turkeys we’ve raised for years. We’re excited to see how they grow and hope to be raising our own home grown next year.

My availability on quail meat will be very limited from here on due to taking on a couple large standing monthly orders from local falconers. (5-800/ quail mo) If you will need quail meat please put in an order as early as possible and be aware that if I don’t have a good hatch rate in a batch that it may take up to 2 months.

Spring is a extremely busy time for me. There’s not enough hours in the day! Planting season is in full swing with clearing and prepping garden beds, starting seeds inside and out, planting seedlings, weaning goat kids and lambs, herding the ducks back into their pen ( constantly), sheep to shear, ramping up quail hatching, and figuring out what to do with 45 eggs a day until the markets start. This year I’m also expanding the current garden space, creating a whole new space for a corn/squash patch, creating a large patch for my morninga trees, and building a whole new herb garden space. So I’m not posting online as much as I’d like because, well, things are pretty busy and I’m slowed down with this foot injury. But I sure love watching things grow and new life sprout up from the soil!

This list is how I keep track of what varieties I’ve already planted or started in snails and trays, I have 22 more seed packets to plant and probably 100plus each corn and sunflower seeds to start. And a pic of the herb garden build in progress.
