The Sow's Purse and The Reluctant Cowgirl

The Sow's Purse and The Reluctant Cowgirl The Sow's Purse is a working Nevada homestead specializing in eggs, honey, vegetables and grains. Reluctant Cowgirl specializes in textile and paper craft.

The Sow's purse was established in January of 2012 on the sage steppes north of the Ruby Mountains. Following in the tradition of the homesteaders who came before, the Middleton family strives to produce quality crops in this harsh, but beautiful place. Since 2011, they have produced several excellent potato and onion crops, having won awards for both. Jason focuses on crop production, Daynnell on processing and preservation. In 2014 they launched an apiary, producing alfalfa honey from Starr Valley fields. Though still in the early stages, they are optimistic at the potential of this venture. Hives can potentially be placed on properties desiring the presence of bees.

2015 brought a greenhouse and greater flexibility and diversity of crops. By extending the season they hope to produce peppers, heirloom tomatoes, herbs and salad greens as well as retail plants. Eggs are available nearly year round thanks to a flock of Cochin and partridge bantams. Bantams were chosen for their reliability and resilience as well as predator resistance. The eggs have a higher proportion of yolk, so they are excellent for baking. They make a good breakfast for those of light or small appetites. If you desire a large egg, two emden and buff goose lay eggs in the late winter through spring. Goose eggs are a delicious delicacy prized the world over and are excellent baking eggs. Daynnell is an accomplished needle worker and enjoys handwork. She embroiders and works with ribbon to create delicate masterpieces. She is available to teach basic embroidery and hand sewing as well as her own style of ribbon work. She had enjoyed working with preteens and teens, but will teach adults and younger children as well in groups or on an individual basis. Custom baking is available on a small scale. Bread and cakes (no fondant or character cakes) are a specialty, but many other delicious delights can be created. Daynnell also has years of experience making jams and jellies. If you love the small and special, produced with love and care, The Sow's Purse and The Reluctant Cowgirl are a small local operation you will be pleased to deal with. Small farms are subject to the whims of climate and crop availability is subject to change. Check page for updates regularly.
