Fall cover crop is up! The lines are from the ripsower. We were a bit heavy on the seeds! It'll work itself out.

The idea is that these fast growing cool season annuals will pop their roots down into the lifted, shattered, ripsown subsoil, and fill it up with organic matter, bringing deeper layers of our soil profile into action to grow food while infiltrating more carbon deeper into our soils. We will graze it this coming spring (maybe this fall too if the weather is good enough), then plant warm season annuals. By next fall, the w**d seeds should be overwhelmed by the cover crop, and the soil should be ready for a new, deep rooted perennial planting.

We also only harrowed our sod, so the soil profile did not get turned over, as when a field is plowed. This keeps our top soil on top, disturbs the bacteria and fungi the least, and gets a nice seed bed going.

Ripsowing our fall cover crop mix into a very rocky field renovation project. This machine is pulling through our old compaction zone and lifting the soil, giving the fast growing annuals a chance to fill the new space with roots.

Just learned that those zigzags in garden spider's webs are called "stabilimentum" and no one really knows why the make them. There is a theory that they warn birds away from flying through the webs. I just think they're beautiful, and a sign of autumn on the way.

The ladies out in our summer annual mix. We let our annuals just start blooming to support pollinators before we graze, I get memorized by the life out here everyday. It takes me far too long to move cows!
