Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium)
One of the stranger native perennials I grow. Looks almost like a thistle but it’s actually in the carrot family. With long tough yucca like leafs, which is where the name ‘yuccifolium’ comes from.

It’s a mostly full sun plant and very drought tolerant as well due to its large rootstock allowing it to store water during the dry months.
Getting upwards of 2-4 feet at full size it can have up to 10 flowering stalks but averages 1-2. It's also well liked by our local pollinators including bees, wasps, flies, monarchs, skippers, and other butterflies.

Despite the name, this plant isn’t something that attracts rattlesnakes. The name comes more from old snakebite lore. In the 1700s, the sap was documented as being used as a snakebite preventative, and the Mesquakies used the plant ceremonially in their rattlesnake dance and used the roots to treat rattlesnake bites. That said, there’s no evidence that it prevents or treats snakebites or any other medical condition.

Overall, it’s a tough, beneficial, long-lived native perennial with a really distinct look. It’s a great addition to a yard, native planting, or pollinator plot.
I currently have some available at the nursery, so if you’re interested, feel free to reach out and set up a time to come take a look at them and the other native plants.
