Sheep doing sheep things as they move to their next paddock. We are currently using poly wire for temporary cross fencing as they get moved every two days. The video pans across the new paddock, old paddock, and previous paddock, which is already starting to recover with all the moisture. The goal here is to provide high quality grazing for the nursing mommas and allow the field to recover for a later "kind of" first cutting of hay.

🌳 There isn't a lot of forest on the farm, but it felt like there should be some leeks around πŸ§…. Since they are yet to be found, we transplanted some from a local family property. There aren't a lot of people who plant them it feels like they belong on this site. We will see what can come from the start of 30 bulbs. 🀞

Don't call it a comeback. Two surprises make me think that we should have taken a closer look at breeding dates 😢. Either way, another lamb, another blessing. A happy single ewe lamb πŸ‘.

Surprise, surprise 😊. Just when we thought lambing season was over one our yearlings surprised us with a single ram lamb. Being a young, first time mom on pasture she is doing a great job. She is half Tunis and half Border Leicester with her lamb being the first 3/4 Tunis lamb born on the farm. It will be exciting to see how he develops.

πŸ„ Trying something new - mushrooms πŸ„. These winecap mushrooms only need wood chips to grow on, so we are trying to put them between our new basket willows. Unlike plants that are grown from seed, mushrooms are grown from spawn. The spawn is a growing medium (sawdust in this case) that already has the fungus growing in it, including the mycelium (think roots in plants). If everything goes well, the willow will help to shade the mulch as it grows and mushrooms will start popping up by September.

Excited to get the girls back on grass, starting in the orchard 🌱. If you note the tarps on the tree cages in the background, that is an attempt to save the early peach blooms from the frost πŸ‘πŸ€ž. The lambs also seem to appreciate the extra open space.

Sweet! We got 9 of our Sweet Sap maples planted today. This selection of silver maple often reports sap with a sugar content of 3-5% and grows fast enough to be tappable in 8-10 years. Sugar maples usually produce about 2% sap.
