Rawhide rattle class pictures from July 16th

This was a hotter day out but all of these rattles as usual turned out beautiful, everyone chose their shapes we had the usual round ones and two hearts! 💕 they all chose their threads, painted their rattles and learned some of the history behind the craft and the culture.

I appreciate each person who takes the risk to try something new with me, and finds joy in the time they spend and realizing hey I’ve met you before turns into yea I’ll see you next Thursday! With over 300 student in my first 9 months of business I’ve met a lot of new genuinely caring and creative friends. That’s always been my goal, gathering all of you together that take the step to come.

I have officially  submitted my first work to a gallery today! She will become stickers very soon too for anyone who would like a part of this piece.

This is Ntytyix (pronounced in•titi•ya) this is the Salish Wenatchi tribal used name for chinook salmon. She is the spirit of the salmon and gatekeeper to the wellbeing of salmon. Earlier this year, I was invited to take part in the first salmon feed of the year. It’s a tradition where we gather as several nations at the Leavenworth fish hatchery to catch the first salmon and should we release its bones back into the water, salmon woman will again provide more salmon for us the following year.

However, this year at the Leavenworth Fish hatchery there was pumps that went out and old infrastructure is getting replaced this winter so we struggled to get the number of salmon this year that have been typical of other years making the limit for salmon one per person. When you talk to our elders, they say that the streams used to be red almost as if you could walk on the backs of the salmon across the river because it was so full of fish.

I made this piece as a gorgeous reminder of a culture that is so connected to the wilderness and that we have responsibility to every part of the wild.

(Fun fact the biggest chinook caught was 126lbs, the size of a small woman 😧)
