Bob finished cultivating the organic soybean research plots that we plant and steward on our farm for Albert Lea Seed House ahead of last night’s rain
A few farm photos from the past couple of weeks
Bob finished seeding our field of organic oats - by the light of the full moon - before the snowfall on Easter Sunday.
A walk through our fields with no wind and 40 degrees (finally!)…is a good remedy for cold weather cabin fever. Happy to see our field of cover crop oats and adjacent field of soybean stubble doing their job helping to hold the soil through the winter.
A couple of our farm photos landed on the cover of Albert Lea Seed's 2022 Organic Seed Guide. See the link below!

Bob’s been busy cutting our fields of oats and rye.
Moved our cows to summer pasture. Love seeing them belly-deep in grass.
The joy of springtime

Very little wind and some sunshine this morning helped to make the -5 degree temperature while doing chores feel a bit more bearable! Bob has been busy during this long stretch of near zero degree days making sure everyone has plenty of bedding, feed, water, and shelter from the wind. Tomorrow's forecast for our area is a high of -9 degrees with wind chill values as low as -40 degrees. Stay safe and warm, everyone! 🧡
Happy New Year!
Fall harvest of soybean seed increases for Albert Lea Seed House is underway on our farm. A lot of organization and attention to detail goes into this work each season.
Some nice looking ears from our Viking corn demo plots
Combined our field of rye and vetch last evening.
Our roadside prairie
Moved our nine cows and their spring calves to summer pasture yesterday... along with our bull, Romeo, of course
Planted organic corn and soybean research trials north of Marshall, Minnesota yesterday. Special thanks to Victoria and Ava from Albert Lea Seed House for the extra help! It was a successful and sunny day.
Bob has been hard at work making modifications to our research plot planter. A man of many trades - farmer, researcher, fabricator/welder, agronomist, mechanic, vet, artist... and then some. We will be hitting the road in the coming days (and warmer weather) to plant organic corn and soybean research trials for Albert Lea Seed House.
Checking fields with Chico tonight. This field of winter rye and vetch will be harvested for seed mid-summer as a special project for the University of Minnesota and Albert Lea Seed House.
One of our new spring calves learning early from the big cows
This little guy found the best spot for the evening!
Our field of winter rye and vetch is greening up nicely!

New life on the farm
Beef shares currently available, processed to your preferences at Lewright Meats in Eagle Grove. Fed organic grass/alfalfa hay, silage, and grains - no hormones. Free pick-up and delivery of orders within 60 miles of our farm.
It's all in the bag... silage bag, that is! During these cold winter months our cows and calves have been enjoying triticale/pea, buckwheat, and corn silage - all chopped and bagged last summer and fall from our organic fields - in addition to lots of grass/alfalfa hay. Makes for content cows and happy farmers!
Bob will be sharing his experience as an organic farmer on a Q&A panel during this event. Check it out!
Peaceful early morning chores... snow on the ground glittering like the stars in the sky. Such priceless beauty.
Excited to have wrapped up our fall harvest season yesterday! Combined the last of our organic corn research plots located just north of Altura, MN. Plots looked amazing. Proud to be doing this research with Albert Lea Seed House and other regional organic farmers.
Oats cover crop looking good in one of our soybean fields. The oats were aerial seeded by Steier Ag Aviation earlier this month.
This season we grew several acres of buckwheat for the first time. We are always interested in trying out new crops to see how they might fit into our organic crop rotation. We were happy with how fast the buckwheat grew and out-competed weeds. Bob swathed and chopped a section of the field to feed as silage to our cattle and then combined the rest for grain. Grain yield and quality was great. Our farm has also been hosting several bee hives this season brought in by an area beekeeper. When the buckwheat was blooming, it was a beautiful site - buzzing with pollinators.
Swathing oats on a lovely August evening...
It has been a busy couple of days chopping a field of spring triticale and forage peas for silage. Our cattle will love eating this throughout the winter!
Scouting fields earlier tonight and checking flower color in soybean variety seed increases that we are stewarding this season.
Some photos from our busy spring season... now quickly changing to summer!
First calf of the season born last Saturday.
Proud parents Shamrock and our bull, Big Daddy. ❤️
