Another beautiful butterfly you might be seeing everywhere, if you live in our neck of the woods is the Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax)

They’re common in Ohio and much of the eastern U.S., often seen in wooded areas, gardens, and near water. Fun fact: they mimic the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail, which helps protect them from predators.

Mimicry & protection → This butterfly survives by appearing like something else. Spiritually, this can speak to the power of glamour, illusion, or shape-shifting.

I was out for a walk collecting native pollinator seeds and saw this beautiful Polygonia interrogationis aka question mark butterfly, sunning in a leaf. These guys fascinate me. Instead of flowers they’d rather feed on moldy fruit and animal f***s. They overwinter as adults in wood piles. Their caterpillars love elm and nettles.
They are considered symbols of mystery and hidden messages.
Can you just look at the colors?!!?

Meet the homestead:
Ryker aka the chick wrangler and Jack the chicken.
This chicken hates me. The whole time I hold her she hollers about it. But the second Ryker gets close, the snuggles are real. Cute.

A small harvest. But a harvest. Ryker picked the melons too early, so they’re chicken food. But we may have time for a couple more to ripen. I’m not mad. Well, I’m not VERY mad anyway. I can’t believe the squash bug dead zucchini plant gave me one more fruit. Just reminds me not to give up too soon! Some lovely herbs for tea tonight. And the start of next year’s sunflower patch.

Yesterday, I was busy until bed time. Cooking in the morning. Bread making at lunchtime, a little mullein foraging in the evening, and salsa making after dinner. Fun times, happy hearts, and full bellies ❤️

We let the baby chicks and new silkies roam around a little today. They didn’t venture too far from their safe space and BLT (the brown one) kinda mothered them for a while. A fun time was had by all.

Our sunflower patch is doing well. The mammoths haven’t bloomed quite yet, but we’re getting a great harvest so far. We plan to at least double this 20ft row for next year.

Meet the homestead:
Our rooster, Vini vidi Vici. So lovingly named by our toddler. We call him Vinny for short. We’ve been spending special time with guy because he’s only about 2 months old and we want him to have a good temperament. So far, he’s been pretty good with us. A little pushy with his gals….but we’re working on it. We think he’s handsome with all that color in his feathers.

Getting ready for next spring and summer season starts as early as next month. We’re drawing plans for a roadside stand, brainstorming how to package and display products, and planning gardens for fall planting and greenhouse stocking.
Soon we’ll start preparing the land to plant for early spring flowers and cold weather crops. I love this life.
