While our schedule hasn’t slowed down yet, the urge to read and write more has already hit. While I am wrapping up the Insects are Fairies series as we prepare to say goodbye to most of the bugs for the winter, I am thinking about starting a Farmer Rox Reads series for the winter.

I’m always referencing certain books at market, in conversations with other farm workers, or in these newsletters.

"No offense to the summer lovers, but this is my favorite time of year. What makes it special?

🍅At this point, you have almost 4 months of fresh veggies in your system. That is a major accomplishment!

🦋The Monarch butterflies are beginning their migration south to Mexico. These dainty flyers will cover thousands of miles and live 8-9 months compared to the previous generations of the summer, which live just a few weeks. Fall blooming flowers like asters, golden rod, marigolds, rudbeckia, sedum, and lobelia help them fuel up for their long trip. *Note: non-organic flowers like mums are 99% more likely to be treated with neonicotinoids, a systemic pesticide that impacts pollinators. If your goal is to support butterflies, opt for organic and native flower varieties*

🛑The mosquitos are over the hill. Enough said!

🍁The great leaf change. The colors are fantastic, but you know what’s even better? The habitat they provide native & beneficial insects. Just by letting the leaves lie in place over the winter, you are increasing the biodiversity of your yard, including beautiful luna moths, mourning cloak butterflies, native bees, and more. The decomposers like earth worms, millipedes, and pill bugs will shred the leaves for you, leaving behind rich organic fertilizer for your lawn come spring. "Recently, the Ologies Podcast with Allie Ward released an episode called Party Psychology: Why we celebrate. I listened to it on the way home from Fox Point Farmer’s Market on Saturday and had a bit of an “Aha!” moment. Some of you may have your own moment as well.

Those of us holding down the title of home chef are actually doing so much more than just the labor of meal planning, grocery shopping, picking up the CSA, cooking with it, and cleaning up. We are kin-keepers. We shape the traditions, diet, and culture of the home. We nourish ourselves and others at the same time. Without these skills, all the work we do as farmers would be null and void..."

Penny for your thoughts: we are considering transitioning the CSA newsletter to substack next season, rather than paying mailchimp $80/month:

-The integrations haven't worked in years, so I have to post separately on each social account anyway.
-Mailchimp has poor deliverability rates despite verifying the domain and optimizing with a professional marketing firm. No matter what I do on the backend, it seems the emails always end up in people's spam and promotion folders.
-The AI features have made the functionality go downhill fast. We don't use those features but they still drag down the whole system, crashing without saving and taking forever to load. Especially during the workday.
-Customer service is just an LLM in a trench coat. You have to answer their riddles three and hop on one foot to speak to a human. And even then, nothing gets fixed.
-I like the way people can engage with the newsletter on a platform like substack (comment, like, etc).
-Substack is free to use, and there's a potential to monetize and expand access for non-CSA members. For example, farmer's market customers, or whathaveyou.

This would be a separate newsletter from my existing Farmer Rox Writes one. The format and content would remain the same. Access would still be included in a CSA membership.

What do you all think? Especially keen to hear from CSA members and other small farmers. Lean times are here, and margins are thin even in the best of times. I'd love to be able to take that $80/mo and put it towards paying off the land loan rather than giving it to a huge tech company like Mailchimp.

Wednesdays 8AM-12PM (or 7AM-11AM if you prefer)
You help bring in the harvest in exchange for a large size CSA share each week. We are out there rain or shine, so check the weather and come prepared to work outside.

"Hello members. Wow, what a week. There’s a virus going around that’s been knocking us out. First Sovereign, then Allily, now me. I had to cancel a field trip, and we’ve been short-staffed. Chores are going un-done, and the heat has been brutal. It’s nothing we haven’t dealt with before, but I’m thankful that today I’m feeling a bit better and the rain and lower temps are a relief.

The good news is, we have watermelons for all. And cured onions and garlic. And lettuce, which everyone has been clamoring for since the recalls at the store."

Something special for the CSA this week!

Our watermelons are heirloom, seeded varieties selected for performance in our temperate climate. Which means you can save the seeds and grow your own next season! It also means that these were selected for flavor rather than seedlessness or shippability.

Dont want to save the seed? Eat them! They are rich in fiber and great for the gut. Failing that, have a seed spitting competition. Maybe some watermelon plants will voluneer of their own accord that way!
