"As we continue to bring in more storage crops, keep in mind that your winter pantry will thank you later by planning ahead. If you have veggie fatigue (which can happen after 12 weeks of eating more veg than the general population!) simply put your food by. Re-organize the freezer, bust out the dehydrator, or if you’re a pickle witch like our dear son (self-ascribed term by the way), pickle it! Beets, cucs, peppers, carrots, and kohlrabi are our favorites for pickles. We have 2nd tomatoes for free when you pick-up on the farm, so please help yourself. I like to cut off the damaged parts and blend them all up in a blender, skins and all, and pour it into gallon freezer bags. In the winter, when you want a tomato sauce, simply thaw it and cook it down with added seasonings. It warms and humidifies your kitchen with the flavor of summer, and I must say, it tastes much better than anything mass produced and sold in a jar at 3 times the price."

We Need Your Help!!!!!!!

Not even a month ago, we received information of a detailed plan to run the largest electrical transmission lines in Wisconsin right through our lands, our asparagus fields, and our perennial fields, and our vegetable fields. This is called the BECI 765 transmission line. Its towers are taller than the Statue of Liberty, and based on topography, our veggie field that we own, just south of our house, is likely a highly desirable destination for this. The tower would take up better than half of that field.

The company is not plotting their routes through existing power corridors, old railways or on state highway corridors, nor burying it, but charting a whole new pathway, through farms, wetlands, and even effigy mount regions. This line would run from my township through Viroqua and the driftless region. The towers have never been built before, anywhere. And, best of all, what would usually be a 2-3 year period of open houses, and chances for public comment, they are ramming through in a 6 week period. The end user is data centers. This isn't about the grid. Our spaces are an extension cord. No specifics on the costs to rate users has been shared. No detailed plot maps. Lightning doesn't move this fast or randomly.

This is an absolute gut punching to us.

We are working with neighbors, non-profits, and other interested parties to try and stop this. But time is of the essence, and we need all hands on deck to try and stop this. This is where you come in.

Please help us fight.

Farmer April plans to bring a petition and details to South Shore Farmer's market this Saturday.

Ultimately, the Public Service Commission will either approve or deny this application in mid/late winter of 2027. Any help or pressure we can apply to them is meaningful. Write your representative. Send comments to MGS. This is the midterms. All would-be elected officials will be on record about this thing. Help us hold them to their words.

Please help. Share this post if nothing else.

Thank you to all our market regulars who come out and buy our produce throughout the season. CSA is our foundation but we always grow more than we need for that alone. We put a ton of care into everything we put out. You support us so we can support you through these times of endless food recalls and foodborne illness.

Through all forms of distruption, be it gas shortage, pandemic, climate disasters, and who knows what else lies ahead, we must not only uplift the growers we have but expand access for more. Local organic and community powered food has always been a good idea. We hope you join us!

BTW, if you're free wednesdays from 7-11 or 8-12, we are looking to add 1 or 2 workershares. Help bring in the harvest each week and receive a large CSA share in return. DM or comment WORKERSHARE to get the link for more info/application.

"Up top, I want to shout out to the Casetta family and especially Curt - our friend and workershare Jodi has passed on this past week. We are so grateful for her outsized presence on this farm community for the last few years, and she is missed dearly.

Her obituary can be found here (link in comments). A memorial oak tree will be planted in her memory here at the farm in the coming weeks.

This is a reminder to hold your loved ones close, and never miss a chance to let them know how much they mean to you."

"It’s the systemic issues that worry us. The cost of living, of groceries, of gas. Funding cuts on our food regulations, dangerous pesticides being approved, and all the other disastrous changes to the farm bill. Medical and insurance stuff, AI and data center headaches, and a large gap to close between us and the transition to the new land. We know we aren’t alone in this, and we haven’t exhausted all options yet, but it takes a toll.

That’s kind of why I chose farming in the first place, though. No matter what happens, there’s always something in front of you to focus on. Moving your body and working with your hands is a great way to manage anxiety. It makes you remember the “soft animal of your body”, as Mary Oliver put it, rather than just sitting or “bed-rotting” like a brain in a jar. The flip side of that is that the mountain of tasks never ends, but if you can just deal with one thing at a time and prioritize first things first, it’s very gratifying to get to the bottom of a to-do list and look back at all you accomplished."

We're in the press! Thanks to Ben Slowey for this great article in the Shepherd Express:

"At Winterspring Farm, food is the foundation for the symbiotic relationship between the land and the community. The West Bend-based organic agriculture farm specializes in growing a wide array of vegetables and herbs that feed families across the Greater Milwaukee Area by way of the farm’s community-supported agriculture (CSA) program, annual seedling sale and appearances at local farmers markets. While Riveredge Nature Center down the road owns the land Winterspring leases, Caleb Trainor and Roxanne Ramirez co-run the farm."

Biodiversity at work.

Remember our last hornworm post? 🐛
Well we found an example of biological control at its finest to show you all! The white cling-ons(scientific term) are actually cocoons of braconid wasps. This means the adult female wasp injected her eggs into the hornworm, they turned to larvae, fed off the hornworms insides 🤢 , then emerged to spin the cocoons you see. Eventually the hornworm will stop eating and ultimately die. So cool! Go Nature!
