Paradise Farm Paradise Farm offers farm education programs for children and adults of all ages. Kim Peavey

"We are gifted with and saved by the beauty in the labor, the holiness in the matter, and the divine possibility of embodying the spirit. And it all happens right here in the dirt and the hurt of it, in the brilliant green and blue, in the weeds, in the carrots."

Just as the sun was rising over the barn this morning, I caught the moon and Jupiter saying hello. Today, October 6, 2026, the thin waning crescent Moon is passing extraordinarily close to Jupiter.

A view from our evening walk.

For years, we lived with a bittersweet reality: our little piece of paradise was surrounded by a managed forest owned by someone who lived far away—and overseen by a decidedly grumpy curmudgeon who seemed determined to make sure no one got too close.

We learned to accept our lot. This was our tiny corner of the world, and we warned the kids in the farm program not to set one foot over the property line or we’d hear about it.

And then, something we never could have dreamed of happened. The family that owned the land sold it to the Cedar Lakes Conservation Foundation. This beautiful stretch of woods will be protected forever. And now, even more wonderfully, it has become public land—with a brand-new segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail running right next door to Paradise Farm.

Today, we can walk off of our path and into these woods. What a treasure. What a gift. What an extraordinary piece of good fortune right next door.

On yesterday’s hike on the Ice Age Trail, the kids found a pair of mourning doves sitting together on the ground.

Rainy days have their own kind of magic.

Today, the farm education children had the rare gift of being among the very first to walk a brand-new stretch of the Ice Age Trail, almost complete on the beautiful land right next door to Paradise Farm.

The Cedar Lakes Conservation Foundation has purchased and protected this property, and soon this new trail will become part of the great Ice Age Trail that winds its way across Wisconsin.

There is something wonderful about walking a trail before it has become familiar—when the path is new beneath your feet, the woods feel undiscovered, and every bend seems to hold a little surprise.

The children trudged through the wet woods, followed the new path, learned to use their compasses, and experienced something that children rarely get to experience: a place that’s in the very beginning of its story.
