Every Tuesday, boxes full of carefully packed birds and hatching eggs leave our farm headed to homes across the country. šŸŖ¶šŸ“¦

We are incredibly meticulous with every shipment — making sure each bird is comfortable, secure, and cared for throughout the journey. Shipping live animals is not simple, and USPS is currently the only mail carrier that handles live poultry. Over the years, we’ve worked hard to build and maintain that ever-evolving relationship.

In fact, we now drive over an hour each way just to personally drop off our shipments at the distribution center so our birds spend less time being handled along the route.

It takes teamwork, communication, relationship building, and a whole lot of dedication behind the scenes each week. Just know: we work hard for every single customer, every single box, and every single bird. ā¤ļø

These little Favaucana babies just hatched here at Sugar Feather Farm — and yes, those gorgeous eggs are the colors they came out of! 🄚

Favaucanas are one of our favorite beginner-friendly breeds because they’re hardy, sweet, and lay a beautiful variety of colorful eggs. Perfect for anyone wanting a fun backyard flock with personality and color.

Guess who is finally laying?! Our guinea fowl

Those of you who know our farm know the story behind our guinea.
We purchased our flock back in 2020 from a Vermonter who had been breeding them for 40 years! She was an amazing breeder and was very well versed in guinea fowl genetics and care.
She taught me so much about them, and how amazing and crazy these birds are. I’m eternally grateful for her wisdom and guidance. šŸ™I treasure the knowledge and insight those before me share, they are really the true ā€œbreedersā€ and mentors, without them these birds, and many others would be forgotten. Thank you to all my mentors you are truly amazing.

Last night I lost my beautiful girl, Spec.

She wasn’t just another bird in the flock—she was one I chose with intention. A micro Serama I had been raising and training for the past year to become a therapy chicken. She had the awareness, the personality, and that quiet connection you can’t force. She was becoming family.

For those who don’t know, Seramas are already one of the smallest chicken breeds in the world—and a micro is even more delicate. Tiny bodies, tiny systems. Spec didn’t lay eggs, but that was never her purpose.

She was healthy. She was loved. She was special.

Last night, she passed from what appears to be aspiration. Something as simple as drinking water can become complicated for birds like this. I had seen her struggle occasionally after drinking, but like so many things with chickens—it can go from manageable to final faster than you expect.

That’s the part people don’t always understand.

Chickens—especially fragile breeds—can be incredibly vulnerable. You can do everything right, watch them closely, give them the best care… and still lose them. It’s part of working with animals that don’t have much margin for error.

And it doesn’t make it easier.

Spec was one of those birds that reminded me why I do this work. Not just raising chickens—but helping people understand them, care for them, and connect with them in a real way.

Because they’re not disposable.
They’re not ā€œjust chickens.ā€

They’re individuals.

And yeah… it’s always the ones you name.

Those who’ve met her know her incredible dedication. Did you know we offer fun, hands-on educational opportunities?
We visit schools, welcome kids (and groups) to the farm, and even offer virtual programs!
We talk birds, visit with feathered friends, feed them, and let kids gently touch eggs — from giant emu eggs all the way down to tiny button quail eggs. Pure magic every time!

This is what it’s all about for us šŸ¤

Watching that spark happen—when someone (especially a child) gets excited about caring for birds the right way.

She started with a Fowl Guru consult so we could set her up for success from the beginning, and landed on Coturnix quail as her perfect first step. Now she’s counting down the days until hatch like it’s the best kind of magic.

Moments like this are why we do what we do—helping people feel confident, supported, and connected to their birds from day one.

If you’re just getting started (or helping your kids start), you don’t have to figure it out alone—we’ve got you 🐣.
