Bristol Hills Lavender and Flower Farm

Bristol Hills Lavender and Flower Farm Inspired by the loss of the backbone of our family, Cpt. Bruce Kevin Clark, we found hope through the belief that flowers are a source of healing.

Finding a connection through our love of flowers and nature, we turned that into a family flower farm.

Flowers are part of my core memories. I hope that the next people who buy this farm love them as much as I do and the flowers assist in creating beautiful memories. And if they mow them all down, that’s okay too because they will still have a gorgeous view of the Bristol Hills.

One of my fondest daffodil memories is when Karl and I helped Camille and Catherine plant over 800 bulbs of ‘Replete’ narcisuss for the girls to earn money towards their Irish dance dresses. They watched them grow and would stand over them wondering if they would be ready to harvest for their showcase. Year after year, they still come back up and remind me of how the girls use to dance through life and all activities instead of walk. They danced on the soccer field, they did jigs in the aisles of the grocery store, they had a dance floor in the top of the barn and loved to dance to the putter patter of the rain.

This petal upon ruffly, buttery colored petal is why we grow ‘Lemon Chiffon.’ The early morning frost looks like it wiped out the plants, I know better; peonies are very resilient. The rain when the buds are opening cause more damage than frost.
I recently asked Camille how many ‘Lemon Chiffons’ I should plant at our new house, she said “As many as possible, an entire row.” I was thinking 3-5 plants. When downsizing from about 6,000 peonies with over 80 varieties I keep telling myself that I can’t have 50 plants of any variety. Except yellow peonies. And pink fluffy ones. And anemone style. Oh and rare reds. Of course corals. Definitely the blush rarities that stop you in your tracks…photo credit

Some of my favorite semi double and double peonies; corals and pinks at the marshmallow stage. It’s hard to imagine that they will open up to be larger than an adult hand. The varieties are Coral Charm, Raspberry Charm and Monsieur Jules Elie.

After waking up to freshly fallen snow today, I needed something to look forward to and to keep me busy. I have been thinking and pondering ideas all day until I came to the conclusion that we have the opportunity for one more Peony CSA bouquet subscription before we sell this house and farm.
On a very personal note; part of the reason for having one more subscription is that the land I am hoping to acquire may have to be sold to pay for medical expenses. If I can lease that land then I can help to hold that sale off until my house sells. Flowers have always been my saving grace and I truly believe that they will continue to be. Our peony CSA bouquet subscription is available through the link in our bio.

I am very open about saying that I don’t like dahlias, that I would prefer to plant a peony and let it stay in the ground any day. Until l didn’t dig up one single dahlia tuber last fall as I knew I was going to sell this farm. My heart began racing when I thought of a late summer and autumn without dahlias. I’m now officially done buying dahlia tubers, because the truth is I absolutely love the flowers and the timing of their blooms. If you grow dahlias you also know that you are honestly never done buying dahlia tubers…let the maddness begin…I have tubers potted up and growing in the basement and there will be dahlias in my life this fall.

This time of year is always filled with seed packets, dahlia tubers and planning for peony season. It’s also my favorite time of year to divide and expand peony fields. If you divide peonies in the Spring while they are still dormant I have found that you don’t have to wait for flowers for 3 years, you gain a year and can obtain flowers in 2 years. The timing is crucial, it has to be before the buds unfurl or you stunt the peonies and have to wait for 4 years for flowers.
Karl prompted me to start planning for new peony patches. This morning I pulled out blank graph paper, and will start scheming 2 new peony patches. I hope to add to gardens already filled with peonies and the most beautiful iris, on land that I have walked on since I was a toddler holding my Grandpa’s hand and have fond memories of learning the plant identification “iris” from my Mom.
