20 minutes of watering can use as much as 3000 gallons of water on a 1/4 acre lot! To visualize, that's 600 cases of the popular flats of water sold at Costco. That's for a typical 1/4 acre yard using typical sprinklers.

That’s a lot of water so you want your yard to use every drop!

Give your yard the best chance to use the water available. Aerate your lawn. Water at night. Avoid allowing water to run off into the gutter. If you’ve ever watered a potted plant with super dry soil you know that most of the water just runs off the top and sides and right out the bottom. Your yard is similar. One tip is to set your system to turn on for 5 minutes per station and allow it to run through every zone. Let the water sink in about 20 minutes then water each station for the remaining 15 minutes. That first 5 minute watering establishes a path for the water to follow - when the sprinklers start again it will be much more likely to follow those pathways to the root zone instead of running off into the gutter.
