8/16/25 | Update from the farm

This week the trellis is hanging in there.
Shoring up here and there but so far the wires are still standing.
Cones are forming beautifully on all varieties.
Expecting to harvest Bullion in two weeks.
The Japanese beetles are still problematic, with some plants experiencing heavy leave damage. (Cones are safe)
Barn swallows still on patrol.
Lessons learned for after this harvest
(1) Apply more a lot more nematodes
(2) add nesting boxes to increase next years bird/ barn swallow population and
(3) Reapply milky spores bacterium.

Trellis repaired!
Fingers crossed for good weather in August as we limp along until harvest time.
Also there's been heavy damage from the Japanese Beetles. Hopefully the insecticidal soap and traps are enough to get us over the finish line. Again fingers crossed.

Disaster Strikes |2 of 2
The storms and high winds destroyed the Japanese beetle traps. The infestation exploded only after a couple days aft the storm. The barn shallows and nematodes were completely overwhelmed. We raised several more traps… giving us time to focus on trellis repairs. Once done then game - on, we’ll break out the dawn insecticidal soap spray.
Keep y'all posted.

Disaster Strikes |1 of 2
Trellis Failure: From last week's storm Bullion trellis collapsed and the "girls" were on the ground.

Structural damage: Trellis poles broke, and several anchors were pulled out by the high winds.

Widespread impact: Other rows of trellised plants also suffered damage, appearing "pathetic."

Ongoing recovery: Efforts are underway to lift "the bullion girls off the ground," and repairs to the trellis system are continuing.

Update from the Farm calendar week 28 | the Japanese beetles are back
A squadron of barn swallows has taken residency in the hopyard.
They're doing their best but there are more bugs than birds.
I need to recruit more birds and release more nematodes.
Our cherry and plum trees are also infested.. Time to up the game.
