Most people never think about this until they have to.
The illustration below shows the rescue skid and harness system we use on every call. It allows a deceased horse to be supported, secured, and moved with care instead of being dragged or winched by the legs.

How a horse is moved matters — especially for the family watching.

In many situations, traditional removal methods may be fast, but for owners who witness them, that can become a memory they never forget.

At Osborne Homestead Services, we do things differently.

Your horse is gently rolled onto the skid, secured with a full harness, and moved supported and intact.

No cables around limbs.
No dragging across the ground.

Every call is handled by two trained personnel, because doing this respectfully and safely is not a one-person job.

Osborne Homestead Services is licensed in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana and fully insured, so families know exactly who is coming onto their property and how their horse will be cared for.

When choosing a provider, ask:

“How will you move my animal?”
“How many trained people will you send?”
“Are you licensed and insured in my state?”

The answers matter. 💙

Did you know? In Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, anyone collecting or transporting a deceased large animal is required by law to be licensed. Not all providers are.
When you're calling around on the hardest day, it feels awkward to ask questions — but it matters. A few worth asking any provider before they arrive:
✔️ Are you licensed in my state?
✔️ How will my animal be moved — winched, dragged, or lifted?
✔️ Do you handle cremation yourselves, or use a third party?
✔️ If third party, who is it — and can I look them up?
✔️ Will my horse be cremated individually?
✔️ Do you follow state and county regulations for burial?
At Osborne Homestead Services, we hold active licenses in all three states we serve, and we coordinate cremation through Pet Cremation Services & Equine in Columbus, OH — a trusted, equine-specialized facility. We hand-deliver the remains back to you personally.
Ask us. Ask anyone you call. Your animal deserves it. 💙

Love seeing this. Every barn should have one of these ready to go—simple step that can make a big impact.

Be ready when it matters most. 🐴⛑️

Every barn should have a well-stocked equine first aid kit on hand for those unexpected cuts, scrapes, and emergencies. Having the right supplies within reach can make a big difference while you’re waiting for your veterinarian.

Our clinic has pre-assembled Equine First Aid Kits available to make it easy for horse owners to stay prepared.

They are $150 and include everything you need to treat a minor abscess, wound, or skin condition that are not serious enough to require a vet visit. We also include a few first aid info sheets!

📞 Call the office to order yours today and keep your barn ready for anything!

❄️ Winter Storm Update ❄️
With the upcoming snowstorm, Osborne Homestead Services will remain available for aftercare services and emergency transportation to Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center.

Please note: road conditions may affect response times, and we will prioritize safety for everyone involved. If you need assistance, call us as early as possible so we can plan accordingly. Stay safe out there.

The winter temperatures are here, and not getting any warmer next week 🙃❄
Cold weather can cause horses to drink less, which increases the risk of colic and impactions.

💡 Winter tip: Add 1 tablespoon of salt to your horse’s feed during winter and weather changes to help encourage drinking and keep them hydrated. When it gets cold, horses forget they have to drink 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Fresh, unfrozen water is a must! Horses drink more water when it's comfortably warm, ideally between 45°F and 65°F. Stay warm out there 🐴💙

01/22/2026

With the snowstorm on the way this weekend, we will be opening at 10:00 AM on Monday to give our staff extra time to arrive safely. 🌨️

We will still have a doctor on call throughout the weekend. Dr. McMinn will be triaging cases and helping determine what can be handled over the phone and what truly needs in-person care. Please understand that the safety of our doctors is also a priority, so only life-threatening emergencies will be seen in the field. We also encourage having a back-up hauling plan in case referral care is needed and road conditions prevent us from getting to you.

🚑 If you need to stock up on emergency meds like Banamine or Dorm Gel, give us a call before the weekend so we can set some aside for pick-up.

📋 Helpful winter tips from Dr. McMinn:
• Make your horse’s normal grain into a warm, wet mash
• Add salt or electrolytes to encourage drinking
• Keep clean, unfrozen water available at all times
• Offer plenty of hay to help maintain warmth and keep the GI tract moving

We hope you and your horses stay warm and safe through this weather. Don’t hesitate to call with questions — we’re here to help. 🐴
