Water Systems, Inc. is proud to contribute to community science!

Two of our employees recently participated in the Congaree National Park BioBlitz event, where members of the community catalogue various plants, bugs, and animals found in the park.

Chelsi and McKenna, our Laboratory Director and Quality Control Officer, helped to collect and identify dragonfly nymphs (larvae) as part of the USGS Dragonfly Mercury Project (DMP).

Mercury is a toxic pollutant that can be carried in the air, found even in remote and protected places. Dragonfly larvae are good indicators of mercury levels in other wildlife, like fish. Data collected from this study help scientists estimate the extent of mercury contamination and potential health risks for fish, wildlife, and humans.

Dragonfly nymphs are aquatic and rely on their extendable jaws to catch prey - ranging from insect larvae to small fish. Dragonflies spend most of their life cycles as nymphs prior to maturing into the flying insects we typically think of as dragonflies!
