A couple days late but we celebrated Earth Day today by planting 45 fruit trees. We added 20 Calville Blanc d’hiver apple trees to our collection. The Calville Blanc apple is a very old apple, dating back to the 1600’s in Normandy, France. It is tart apple that is a good eater and great for baking!

We also planted 7 varieties of peaches including some white varieties.

This brings our total of fruit trees to well over 500 with 50 apple and 10 peach varieties. Stop by this Sunday at 2 pm for an orchard tour!

Long night at the farm last night. With temperatures projected to reach 26 degrees for a prolonged period of time, and our peach trees and some of our favorite apple varieties well into bloom we attempted to save the delicate flowers from a killing frost. Any temperature below 27 degrees can kill the flowers and result in loss of fruit for the season.

Spraying water onto the blooms creates a thermal insulation and starts an endothermic reaction within the tree keeping temperatures at 32 rather, potentially saving the flowers.

Starting at 11 pm we set up sprinklers and our portable tank to provide over 1500 gallons of water to coat our trees. The results seem variable, peach trees were more heavily coated with the sprinklers. Some of the apple trees look pretty frosted but time will tell.

By sunrise at 6:04 we packed up the hoses and started to thaw out our hands. Hopefully that we’ll be able to provide delicious peaches, Redfield and wickson apples and cider this fall! Stay tuned
