Our West Fulton orchard is on steeply-sloped Lordstown Channery Silt. It’s well-drained soil that requires irrigation in mid summer. The ground here is feast or famine; either too wet or too dry. Fortunately, the property is surrounded by mountain springs, so the trees are never thirsty.

The cider apples we grow are biennial in nature and this is an “off year” for most varieties. That being said, there’s a nice crop of Porter’s Perfection, Harrison, Dabinett, Redfield and our dear native bittersweet, Major Harrison’s Fedora. After a decade of planting, these five varieties remain the most consistent croppers.

We’ve been working towards a “just enough” spray program, amidst increasing fungal and insect pressure here at the forest’s edge. To let the trees struggle - just enough - to produce high-quality fruit. Low yields, high sugar content. It’s a delicate dance. And we’re still learning to tango!

The codling moth is the pest of the season. And marssonina leaf blotch is a constant battle from wild apple trees all over the mountainside. It’s also the time of year where we try and mitigate round-headed apple borer damage and catch-up with weeding (a seemingly unobtainable goal). All the while, there’s an eerie smoke in the air from the northern wildfires and an almost transient haze to the atmosphere.

Just a few random photos from recent days. Oh, and our tasting room is open today and Sunday from 1-6pm!

It’s shaping up to be a stellar weekend here at our orchard-based cidery!

And it’s the perfect time for a few glasses of our Harrison/Porter’s Perfection blend.

While the 2025 growing season has certainly presented its challenges (Marssonina Blotch, Black Rot & Codling Moth to name a few), we are grateful that for a crop of our two favorite apples that make up this blend!

Sat & Sun 1-6pm for bottles-to-go, glass pours as well as local meat and cheese.
