This project is about more than a building. It’s about supporting the farmers who grow our food – and making sure we have a reliable, year-round place to distribute it to our community.

A permanent Farm Store means stronger farms, a stronger local food system, and a stronger community. A temperature-controlled building means our farm crew can serve customers year round, no matter the weather (swipe to see snow in the farm store! ❄️)

Granby-based Squadron Capital has made a $100,000 leadership gift to help fund the renovation of the old West Granby United Methodist Church building into a year-round farm store, and they are asking you to help us match it.

Learn more and join the movement at holcombfarm.org; or mail your contribution to: Friends of Holcomb Farm, 113 Simsbury Road, West Granby, CT 06090. Thank you Squadron and thank you to our Holcomb community!

Opening day for the season is June 10th! Crossing our fingers we’ll be in the new farm store shortly after that!

🍅TOMATOFLATION 🍅
Due to a severe frost in Florida, a damaging blight in Mexico, diesel prices, and tomato tariffs, tomato prices are up in grocery stores. Not to worry! We have hundreds of heirloom, organic hybrid, non-GMO, paste, and cherry tomato seedlings for you to grow your own independent supply of tomatoes!

If kept healthy, one tomato plant can be expected to produce 10 to 30 pounds of tomatoes each season. Right now organic heirloom tomatoes are going for $6/lb in the grocery store. We sell heirloom tomato plants for $6/plant. I am no mathematician but I think there is a clear bang for your buck winner here...

There will a wagon of 50% off tomatoes (while supplies last) AND any purchase over $100 gets you a free tomato plant! Our farm crew members will be available for questions Friday and Saturday to help you grow your best garden yet!

We also have a ton of new plants! BASIL, ZINNIAS, SUNFLOWERS, ZUCCHINI, SUMMER SQUASH, and MORE!

Everything you need for your best summer garden. Last day of plant sale is tomorrow 🤗

This farm store design?! Hello! 😍 Imagine a destination farm store, located in West Granby, where you can find fresh, local food all year long. A place to gather, connect, and support local farmers – no matter the season. That’s the vision: transform the former West Granby United Methodist Church building into a vibrant, year-round Farm Store for our community. A local food system hub that producers and you can depend on 🥕🤝💚

For the Month of May, Squadron Capital is inviting the community to match their $100,000 gift to help reach this vision. Your gift helps bring this space to life – and right now, every dollar moves us closer!

Learn more and give today at holcombfarm.org; or mail your contribution to: Friends of Holcomb Farm, 113 Simsbury Road, West Granby, CT 06090. Thank you to our Holcomb community for being a part of this effort and thank you Squadron Capital!

Cover Crop 🌾🫛🍀 what would we do without you?! One of the least glitzy and unassuming collection of plants on the farm to the untrained eye but iykyk and this spring’s cover crop has been something to behold.

☘️We have about 5 fields that will be rested in cover crop this season which is not only a gift to the soil but a relief to us because no matter the weather that gets thrown at us the cover crop can handle it. Rain? Cover crop roots will soak it up like a sponge and prevent flooding and erosion. Blasted by heat and sun? Cover crops will act like trees and shade and cool the soil.
🌳What the cover crop gives to the soil is a multilayered-forest-like-ecosytem. There is low growing clover in the understory, climbing peas in the middle, and tall wheat at the top. Each layer has its purpose and nutrients and acts like a shield for the soil.
🫛We mow the cover crop at different heights depending on what is happening in those fields. We mow it about halfway to encourage new supple growth that the soil ecosystem can easily breakdown for our cash crops and then in some fields we let it grow tall and woody because we want to maximize carbon and biomass
🌾This year we used more wheat in our mix instead of rye. Even though wheat is a lot more expensive per bag, it is much easier to deal with than rye when it comes time to mow and terminate. In addition to being a dream to work with it’s also very beautiful which is always appreciated
🪱Anyone drive through the heart of the country where industrial farming reigns supreme? You will see miles of bare ground post harvest. We lose millions of tons of top soil every year due to poor farming practices. Cover cropping is hands down one of the major key techniques in a sustainable food system because it protects and feeds our most vulnerable and finite resources: our soil.

We ❤️ cover crop (maybe the farm crew should get that tattooed on our arms)
