Such a neat story!

For 11 harvests a blue heeler named Ike rode in the grain truck with Lowell, who's 74 and farms alone outside Colby, Kansas. Ike always jumped out at the elevator and sat on the scale while the truck was weighed.

In the third week of September, Lowell had a stroke. His sister got him to the hospital in Hays, and a neighbor took the dog.

The next morning the scale camera at the elevator recorded Ike trotting up the drive at 6:40 with no truck behind. It's 3 miles from the neighbor's place. Ike sat down on the scale and stayed until Deb, who runs the elevator, carried out a bowl of water.

It was the same every morning that week.

Lowell still had 380 acres of corn standing. Deb taped a note in the scale house window, and word went down the line the way it does.

On the first Saturday of October, 14 combines and 22 trucks pulled into his place. They had it all in by dark.

Ike rode in with the first load and took the scale.

If you know me, you know I got an ornery streak a mile wide-and it comes honestly (if you know my dad and knew my grandpa, you definitely get what I’m sayin). Anyways, I’m building another pole barn and Wyatt the farm dog hopped onto a stack of tin sheets when the delivery truck unloaded them. He looked like a stray dog that came with the load, so I decided to play a joke on the yard manager Eli up at Graber Supply. I texted him a picture of the load and the pup on the pile and said thanks for the materials but what’s with the dog that got delivered?!? Eli didn’t know what in the world was going on. Today I went up there for some odds and ends and I took Wyatt along and told the office staff to page Eli to the office to collect the dog I was returning. You should have seen his confused face 🤣😆🤠. After we all had a good laugh, Eli gave both Rusty and Wyatt a tour of the shop where all our stuff comes from. Pretty neat folks up there at Graber!
