I want to take a minute to thank all of those who chose Shady Rest Tree Farm for your tree, wreath, or garland during the 2025 Christmas season. None of this would have been possible without my many helpers. Thanks to God, Mauro, Lasaro, Jordan, Savannah, Carrigan, Owen, Cole, Coltin, Bryson, Jonathan, Alex, Tracy, Steve, Melanie, Lane, and others for all you did this year.

I saw many familiar faces this season and also welcomed some first-timers, even a few who said this was the first time they had ever been to a farm for a “real tree.” Special thanks to a customer from Kentucky who bought a twenty-footer. The special thanks is not for buying the tree, but for keeping the lights on. He was a third generation underground coal miner, and it was a pleasure having him at the farm.

Merry Christmas to all, and we hope to see you at the farm in 2026.

It seems that when Halloween is over, thoughts turn toward the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We’ve had a beautiful fall here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Most of the leaves have fallen, but some are hanging on, and of those hanging on, the maples are still strutting their stuff. I love fall. The lower temperatures and lower humidity usually mean less sweating for me.

I am starting to get several calls and texts about the upcoming Choose and Cut season. We will officially open for Choose and Cut on Saturday, November 22nd at 9 am and will remain open, 9-5, till Christmas Eve, weather permitting. Hope to see y’all in a few weeks! - Tim

For many years, I have randomly chosen a veteran who comes to the farm and presented them with a free tree. This year’s recipient was E. Wayne Johnson, Command Sergeant Major, US Army (Retired). It was a pleasure having him and his wife at the farm. We appreciate your service, sir, and I, for one, believe every day should be Veterans Day. If you enjoy the time you get to spend with friends and loved ones during the holidays, or if you enjoy celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, thank a veteran the next time you see one. The freedoms we love and sometimes take for granted are all because of men and women like Mr. Johnson.

The last little collection of photos includes some of the final customers of our 30th season. I have often observed onlookers, young and old, watch as the Howey Tree Baler wraps their tree with twine, preparing it for transport. I get a Christmas card every year from the Howey Company. On this year’s card were verses from Luke 2:10-14:

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, good will toward men.

Merry Christmas from Tim and the crew. We hope to see you back at the farm in 2025!

If you still need a tree, the weather on Saturday looks great! It will also be the last day of the season when both farms are open at the same time.

If you’re looking for a really tall tree or just want to visit the donkeys and chickens, the team at the 287 Trading Post Road location would be happy to help. We still have plenty of trees available in all sizes, up to 20 feet tall.

Please note: cash or check only.

Thank you!
Tim

From start to finish! 🌲 These pictures were sent to me by Brad. The 14-foot Nordmann Fir was cut at our 287 Trading Post Road location and taken to Jonesville, NC, where it was beautifully decorated. Check out these amazing photos — what a gorgeous tree! 🎄✨

It is COLD here in the mountains of North Carolina. Cloud cover, wind, and a passing snowflake ❄️ makes for a chilly tree hunt. Please come prepared for this kind of weather. It looks like we will hold onto below average temperatures for several more days.
