"Too normal people bore me to death. I love extravagant people. By nature I’m restless and very anxious. I don't do things in half. I can go from one extreme to the other quite easily. I don't like what's in between. Gray has never been my favorite color. I change from day to day, like a chameleon.
I like trying to change myself in a positive way, I intend to try to improve myself. Every day is different for me and I can't wait to face it, because I don't want to be the same person as yesterday." ♥️ (click for full image)

“I have to say, Freddie tends to have the image of being someone who’s like a diva and won’t compromise, but actually, Freddie was a wonderful force of coherence. If he was questioned in the interviews about being the leader of the band, he would always say, ‘No, I’m not the leader, I’m the lead singer, but we are a democracy.’
It was absolutely true. So very often, Roger and John would be pulling in opposite directions. Roger and myself always in opposite directions. Freddie would be able to find the sort of glue to make it still hang together.
So I think we all owe Freddie a lot because of that. The catalyst that he was apart from being a great creator in his own right. He was part of the essential glue that made this very kind of rocky organization that managed to keep creating.
You see, Freddie is different levels, too, because on one level, yes, he was always a rockstar, he was singing in Kensington Market, going around and calling anyone he met, just generally being a flower, a very confident.
He behaved as if he was Robert Plant at the time, and nobody minded him because he just had that aura about him. But underneath it, no, massive insecurity, massive shyness, right to the end.
He had a very private side to him. He faced up to his insecurities by building himself in the way he wanted to be. He’s a very self-made creature. If you peeled up all the layers of the onion, you would find a lot of complexity, a lot of which he denied, which is smart.” ♥️

As a live band, Queen work hard to entertain in true showbiz fashion. At the moment, they’re not particularly well-known but they’re already attracting screamers. Until recently, the band have had to divide their attentions between studies and Queen but as Freddie explained:
“We’ve always wanted to be pop stars and the group used to come first. Now we’re all qualified, we can concentrate more on the band. We’re confident people will take to us, because although the camp image has already been established by people like Bowie and Bolan, we are taking it to another level. The concept of Queen is to be regal and majestic. Glamour is part of us and we want to be dandy. We want to shock and be outrageous, instantly. We don’t want people to have to think if they like us or not, but to formulate an opinion the moment they see us.”
Brian and Freddie are the main songwriters, but they write individually. Mercury has a tendency to fantasize melodic and is more down to earth.
“Singles are important to us and to have a hit now would help the band. We’ve more to offer than bands like The Sweet, we’re not just pop, because our music covers a wide area.” says Freddie.
“We’re worried that the name Queen would give people the wrong impression. We want to be a good British regal rock band and we’ll stick to that way of thinking. Our music should override the image, because we’ll concentrate on putting out a good product the whole time. Teenyboppers will probably like us and we might get a bit of a ‘pop’ tag but it won’t last. At the moment, we’re just interested in creating a reaction amongst those who come to see us.” ♥️

“Other than his beloved London, Freddie’s favorite place on earth was Japan. He loved everything about Japan, except sushi and sashimi. He had a lovely collection of lacquered boxes, much of his furniture had Japanese motifs, a lot of his crockery and porcelain was from there, and he was acknowledged, at one time, as having one of the largest collections of antique Japanese wood block prints in a private collection in the UK. He also has numerous Hakata dolls, the porcelain dolls painted with lifelike colors in glass cases dotted around the place.”

On this day, May 7, 1985, Freddie releases ‘Mr Bad Guy’ in the USA by CBS Records.
As thousands of adoring fans flock to buy Freddie Mercury’s first solo album this week, He tells of the one thing that all his success and all his millions can’t ever buy, “You can have everything in the world and still be the loneliest man, and that is the most bitter type of loneliness,” says Freddie. “Success has brought me world idolization and millions of pounds, but it’s prevented me from having the one thing we all need-a loving, ongoing relationship.”
Interviewer: Your song ‘My Love Is Dangerous’ on the Album, ‘Mr. Bad Guy, is that a warning from you ?
Freddie: Not really, it’s just… Well a bit yes. That’s something that I feel that maybe that’s what my love is, you know. I haven’t actually analyzed myself and said ‘OK, my love is dangerous.’ I think after all these years I just feel I’m not a very good partner for anybody and I just think that’s what my love is. I think my love is dangerous, who wants their love to be safe?
Can you image writing a song ‘My love is safe?’ It would never sell.
Interviewer: You talk a lot about love on the Album.
Freddie: Yes, I know, I don’t know why.
Interviewer : It obviously means a lot to you.
Freddie: I’m possessed by love, isn’t everybody though?
Interviewer: Yes, I suppose they are. Deep down there in spite of the tough fade you put on, are you a romantic at heart?
Freddie: Well, I guess so, you know. Well i think, yes I just… I like writing songs about love, because I mean there’s so much scope and also they have so much to do with me and you can talk about your kind of lover. It’s something that maybe I’m striving for. I’m trying to say that I can be somebody’s lover, you know, a good lover, that’s another aspect of me, too. I expect something different now, come on.
Interviewer: Is this solo album like starting a new career?
Freddie: No – it’s just a bit on the side.
Interviewer: You will be working with Queen again?
Freddie: Oh, definitely, otherwise I’d be a car mechanic!
There’s much more to Freddie Mercury than most of us ever see. Underneath the bizarre clothes and images that have become his trademark, there is the other Freddie. He sums it up simply, “Sometimes, I just long to be perfectly ordinary as well.” ♥️

On this day in Queen history, May 8, 1977, Queen performed at Johanneshovs Isstadion (Ice Stadium), Stockholm, Sweden. This is the first of eight shows on Queen's second European tour, their first since late 1974.
This leg of the ‘A Day At The Races’ tour finds Freddie's voice in great shape.

Freddie, after ‘Ogre Battle,’ "Thank you. Good evening, Stockholm! Are you ready for some rock and roll tonight? OK, we're gonna give it to you. I must say, it's really nice to be here after such a long time. This is our very first time and we'll have to come back here again. Thank you for the welcome. Tonight we're gonna do songs from all our albums that you've probably got and heard."
Freddie, after ‘White Queen,’ "We'd like to carry on with a song from our latest album. You don't have singles around here, I mean, not real popular anyway. This used to be a single, and it was on the album anyway, a song called ‘Somebody To Love.’”
‘Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy’ is played live for the first time. It would never be performed completely, as the third verse would be skipped, always following ‘Killer Queen’ in the medley.
After the medley, Freddie says, "That was our longest medley to date... a slightly different version of Bring Back That Leroy Brown." He then responds to requests being shouted from the audience. "We'd like... we're gonna do ‘Liar,’ don't worry. Right now for you darlings, we'd like to do a number that we've never done on stage before. This is the first time ever, and I think it's nice to do it in Stockholm. Join in if you'd like. This is a song called ‘Death on Two Legs.’” It replaces ‘Sweet Lady’ tonight.
Before ‘Brighton Rock,’ Freddie toasts the audience in Swedish. "Stockholm, cheers! Skål."
For the bulk of the show, Freddie now wears a black and white checkered costume, replicating one worn by the ballet dancer Nijinsky. For the second encore, he introduces his flashy silver lurex leotard to the show, now performing Big Spender without the strip spectacle.
The members of ABBA attended the gig and met Queen backstage afterwards.

On this day in Queen history, May 8, 1985, Queen performed at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan as part of their “The Works Tour.”
Queen are in Japan to perform five shows that would turn out to be their final tour of Japan with Freddie Mercury and John Deacon. ♥️
Compared to their April shows in Australia, the band offer relatively more enthusiastic performances in Japan, a nation that embraced the band from the very beginning.

Freddie, What kind of person are you?
“How do you expect me to answer a question like that, dear? There are various aspects of me. The thing I treasure most, above music, is meeting people. I like being sociable, going out to functions and things, and generally, I’m likeable I think. But I can change and be very moody and obnoxious. I’m a sort of chameleon. Success is teaching me a lot of things and I’m adapting. You’ve got to learn to come up with decisions very quickly. There’s no beating about the bush in this business.”
