Hay is down and baled! Of course it couldn’t go all the way smoothly, but if it weren’t for family friends we wouldn’t have got done as fast! The bearing in the baler had to go out of course and it was caught pretty quickly! 🙏 Here’s to fixing things up and hoping for a second cutting here in a few months!

This! This right here is why we keep this mare!!!! Oppie is such a good mare! She knows what her job is and LOVES it! She was ready to go at first, but was so well behaved for Odessa! Mind you, she hasn’t been driven since October 2024 and this is her pulled right out of the field, not lunged! This is why she has earned her stay at this farm! If you’re interested in learning to drive, don’t be afraid to reach out!

🐴 Last up in our Golden Horseshoe Club is Col Abbie Jac Whiz, AKA “Gabbie”! She is the newest addition to our farm and we got her in September of last year as a 23 yo. She was bred to be a Reining Horse, but an injury during her training in her younger years changed that. Before coming to us she was bred several times due to her having a fantastic bloodline until she couldn’t be bred anymore. Then we were blessed to acquired her at the Smokey Lane sale and she is one of the sweetest mares that I would have another one of her in a heart beat if I could! She is a horse that is meant for grandmas, kids, and learning. We do have some arthritis that we have to manage due to the injury, but she does pretty well! After we got her, Cali from CaliCo Equine Services did some work on her as well and was able to get her feeling great allowing more of her sassy, but loving personality come out! If you never get the chance to meet her, you’re missing out! 🩷🩷🩷

Third up on the Golden Horseshoe Club is “Buckey”! He is a dwarf miniature horse roughly in his mid to late 20’s. He is the one with a lot of history as this is his second and last time on the farm. He is here to live out his golden years so to speak! 💛 I believe he was first acquired by some friends of ours the Pattersons years and years ago. From there he has just been passed around between at least 4 familys depending on what child was ready for him. By the time that child would outgrow him another child would be ready for him! We got him back around 2022 as a present for our daughter and he has been here ever since. He’s old and cranky for sure, but we wouldn’t have him any other way! In his younger years he would ride and drive, but in the last year he has been having a harder time getting around so he’s just here to live his best old man life! He still has a lot to teach on the ground and if it weren’t for some progress in the weight loss area, the chiropractor, and an our massage therapist Cali he wouldn’t have even improved! We’re not sure how much longer he’ll be around, so until he can no longer live comfortably, we will enjoy him! So here’s to our old man! 💙💙🐴

Next up on the Golden Horseshoe Club is Allie! She’s roughly 17 years old and drives Pleasure, whereas Oppie drives Draft. Let me tell you, these two Halflinger mares don’t like being worked every day, but they love their job in the cart! This mare in particular was the first I fully broke to drive and she’s super sensitive with her mouth in the cart which took me a minute to sort out. 😅 However, she’s a lot of fun and super sweet!

I suppose we’ll start by slowly introducing the horses that in some way started this all. They are affectionately named the “Golden Horseshoe Club” 😅 as they are all getting older with most of them being in their 20’s. This here is the OG, her name is Oppie. She is as sassy as she is thick, but gentle with the kiddos! She drives and mostly just looks pretty in the field. You can pull her out today after being off for quite possibly a year and she knows her job and is happy to do it. She has taught a few kids as well as myself to drive and is ready to teach our little redheads! 😊 She is also the mare that started this all! What started out as a simple “Can I lead your pony?” while volunteering at a 4-H horse event (I always had quarter horses), turned into a wonderful marriage and family. For that, I think she deserves a little bit of spotlight! 🐴💙💛

What started out as simply buying the family farm is slowly turning into a legacy that we can hopefully, one day leave for our girls! 💕Now that the LLC name change has been accepted and completed we are now Hickory Ridge of West Lafayette, LLC, DBA Hickory Ridge Farms. I’m sure you have seen Hickory Ridge Excavating, LLC or Hickory Ridge Halflingers mentioned before, and that is us, but things are changing. We will always have the Halflingers and Buckey as long as we are blessed to have them, just with the addition of a few quarter horses for now. While we’re still deciding what direction we want to go, one thing is for sure, that as a family we are excited for all the plans and changes to come, so stay tuned!
