Happy Friday! We’ve been MIA for a couple of weeks, but we’ve been staying busy getting ready for KILE. This morning was an early one as it’s show day for us, but we’re looking forward to a fun day with our fellow Angus breeders!

Today is the start of the Chester County 4-H Fair at the Romano 4-H Center in Honeybrook! All summer long, 4-Hers have worked tirelessly to get their animals ready for the fair.

Today, goats, sheep, and cattle show. Tomorrow the hogs show. And on Wednesday, everything sells.

We encourage you to stop by and watch the kids work with their animals they’ve spent all summer getting ready. Additionally, showing up on Wednesday night to support the sale would mean the world! The money these kids raise from their projects goes towards supporting their future 4-H projects, in addition to college/trade school funds among other things!

As Forrest Gump would say “From that day on, if I was goin’ somewhere, I was running” 🏃

These cows had the same thought! Last weekend, some of the old show heifers got moved to the hay field after second cutting. Their calves took off for the woods and the cows weren’t far behind. Although some of these girls are 10+ years old, they still have the right kind of feet and legs to allow them to take off across the pasture.

When we look at our calf crop, we focus on keeping heifers who are flexible and comfortable on the move, with the right kind of hoof shape. This allows them to stay mobile and flexible as they age, improving their quality of life and requiring less maintenance.

What a fun, but hot week at the Pa Breeder’s Show! We were blessed to enjoy our week spending time with family and friends and celebrating our great country’s 250th birthday!

We were also blessed with a wonderful show!

Happy ! We pull blood for genetic testing on most of our registered animals. Genomic testing can detect numerous genetic abnormalities, in addition to provide more information about their genetic performance and what their offspring is expected to do.

To submit a blood sample, we label each card. It could be the animals farm name, registered name, RFID tag, or tattoo number. We then draw blood from behind the ear and drop it into the circle. Once dried, it gets mailed off and we get the results in a week or so!

Happy ! A couple of weeks ago, we had the almost perfect hay making weather. It was sunny, low 70’s with almost no humidity and a light breeze.

We got the hay mowed and tedded and it was dry within 24 hours.

But the day we went to bale it, the wind picked up and tried to blow every windrow away! This did slow down our production because we had to rake right in front of the baler, but we were able to get it in without any rain!

We’re thankful for a safe and beautiful looking first cutting!

Happy and early Memorial Day Weekend! If you’ve visited the grocery stores recently, you’ve probably noticed the price of beef has gone up. There are a lot of factors that can impact beef prices, but the biggest ones recently have to do with drought/fires. Ranchers across the country have been faced with extreme weather, leading them to sell off cows. Some don’t have enough grass to feed them because of the lack of rain, others lost all their grass in the fires.

With the sell off of these cows, it has decreased calf numbers, which affects the number of steers that will eventually end up in the food supply. Also, more heifers have been kept back as ranchers work to rebuild their cow numbers, which only hurts the beef supply even more. Due to this, the price of beef at the grocery stores, farmers markets, and your local farmer have all gone up.

Ranchers aren’t out there trying to price gouge you, there are just so many underlying factors and costs driving the price up. As you breakout the grill this weekend to hopefully enjoy some Angus beef 🥩 remember the ranchers who are working everyday to raise the high quality beef you get to enjoy!
