Happy and early Memorial Day Weekend! If you’ve visited the grocery stores recently, you’ve probably noticed the price of beef has gone up. There are a lot of factors that can impact beef prices, but the biggest ones recently have to do with drought/fires. Ranchers across the country have been faced with extreme weather, leading them to sell off cows. Some don’t have enough grass to feed them because of the lack of rain, others lost all their grass in the fires.

With the sell off of these cows, it has decreased calf numbers, which affects the number of steers that will eventually end up in the food supply. Also, more heifers have been kept back as ranchers work to rebuild their cow numbers, which only hurts the beef supply even more. Due to this, the price of beef at the grocery stores, farmers markets, and your local farmer have all gone up.

Ranchers aren’t out there trying to price gouge you, there are just so many underlying factors and costs driving the price up. As you breakout the grill this weekend to hopefully enjoy some Angus beef 🥩 remember the ranchers who are working everyday to raise the high quality beef you get to enjoy!

May is ! Quality beef comes from quality raising. We are BQA (Beef Quality Assurance) Certified. BQA educates producers on the most up-to-date best management practices, animal husbandry, and properly handling techniques. One of the biggest things is safe administration of vaccines and antibiotics.

Shots can cause damage to the muscles, which end up being what we consume. Any shots we give are located in the neck. There are no real usable cuts of meat that come from this area, therefore, it is safe for the animal and safe for the end consumer. Shots should only be given in this area to ensure the highest quality beef!

Happy ! A couple weeks ago we did some springtime maintenance for the girls. Everyone got de-wormed to keep intern parasites away. Our de-wormer it a topical solution that’s absorbed through their skin.

The cows also got a horn fly bolus. This is given orally and slowly released once it hits their rumen. It is eventually passed through to their manure, where it kills any horn flies that are laid in their manure!

We do all this to help improve herd health and comfort, especially as we move into warmer weather!

Happy ! Spring cleaning is in full swing around here! Last weekend, a dead tree finally hit the ground. With a skid loader and chainsaw, the tree was cleaned up in a matter of minutes.

The water troughs also got some much needed attention. Between the cows slobber and grass, these water troughs can get pretty nasty. After a quick dump out, they are looking much better!!

It’s time for those real summer cuts 💇🏽‍♀️ It’s hard to think about summer with the temperature it’s been some of the days this week, but it’ll be here before we know it! These cattle are already starting to lose their winter coat and shed like crazy.

We slick shear our show cattle this time of year to get rid of their winter coat and promote new hair growth! They might be a little chilly for a day or two until they get used to the weather, but shearing their hair off will make them more comfortable the rest of the spring and into the summer months!

This winter we’ve been extremely wet, and it’s easy to complain about all the extra moisture most days. But in parts of the country, like Nebraska, they are so desperately in need of rain. The fires have burnt over 800,000 acres. Entire livelihoods have been wiped out in the blink of an eye.

Today, we pray for rain. We pray for those who lost their homes, livestock, and everything they hold dear. We pray for the first responders who are working to put these fires out.

Where we live, it’s hard to imagine something of this magnitude, however, it’s a reality for so many ranchers across the country. Join us in praying for those who are currently battling these fires.

Today we officially kicked off calving season with a healthy heifer calf!! We are thankful for a warm, sunny day for the first calf to be born on and a smooth delivery.

Now, our new hand wasn’t much help when it came to keeping an eye on the action 🤣 I guess that’s what you get for free help! 😴

It’s ! It’s been pretty chilly/snowy/rainy around here. During bad weather like this, we make sure our cattle have fresh bedding, including the ones we show.

While cows in the field can get muddy, the show cattle need to be kept cleaner so their hair stays in good shape for shows.

The way our barn is set up makes it more difficult to re-bed show pens. We dump scoops of mulch in the alley way and use shovels and pitchforks to spread it out. It’s a bit of a job to do, but the calves always enjoy their fresh bed afterwards!

Happy !

If you missed it, it’s been pretty chilly 🥶 this week and it looks like it’ll stay that way for a few more days. Cattle are so cool because even though it’s been cold and snowy, they’re able to stay warm and toasty!

This picture was taken last Sunday during the snow storm. Both of these bulls were outside the entire time but able to stay warm. How do we know that? The snow cover on their backs! They were keeping enough heat in to keep the snow from melting. Had they been losing body heat, the snow would have melted on contact.

While we’re grateful for a bit of sunshine (although it’s not much warmer), we’re also thankful for healthy cattle who can tough out winter weather!

Oh, and we’re really thankful for cameras so we can periodically check on them without having to venture out in the cold 😄
