Bahamian Me — Series 🇧🇸🩵

Picking Sea Grapes

The beautiful, delicious sea grapes were always a delicacy for us island people. Every year we waited for just the right time to pick them and enjoy their tangy, sweet flavor. They grow wild and in abundance along the coastal beach areas of the island.

We would walk the sandy paths with a bowl or bucket, gathering sea grapes, then sit somewhere nearby and eat until we were full. Back then, we didn’t know how good they were for us — we only knew they were sweet, delicious, and free. Nature’s candy.

So many good times were spent walking those long paths to the spots where the sea grapes grew — hanging out, laughing, enjoying the sun, and eating as many as we could. Simple days. Pure joy.

If you’ve never had a sea grape, I hope one day you get the chance to try one. It’s something you wouldn’t want to miss.

Ahhh… the good old days.
And although the tradition still goes on today, people are still out there picking sea grapes on Man-O-War Cay, Abaco, Bahamas — just like we did.🫶🇧🇸

Bahamian Me Series 🇧🇸

Baking Bread with Aunt Mady

Aunt Mady raised my dad — she was like his mother and my grandma. She had no children of her own, but she poured her love into everyone around her, especially through food. Making bread and treats for family and friends was her joy, and her table was always a place of warmth and welcome.

I was so fortunate and blessed to have her as my aunt. On school breaks, she would bring me to her home for lunch — fresh homemade bread, egg salad, and a bowl of ABC vegetable soup. Those afternoons stayed with me. They were simple, comforting, and full of love.

Bahamian home-baked bread is something truly special — warm, filling, and made with care. And if you’ve never had it, you’re missing more than just bread… you’re missing a taste of home, tradition, and the kind of love that lingers long after the last slice is gone. 🫶🇧🇸

Here Today Gone Tomorrow

**Bahamian Me Series ** 🇧🇸🇧🇸

I grew up on a small island in the Bahamas that is only 2.5 miles long and about half a mile wide at its widest point. It is situated right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. Life on the island was always a big adventure, and I was happy to be a part of it. Over the next few weeks, I will share some of my favorite island adventures.

Today is #2 in the Bahamian Me Series. Fishing with my dad was always the most fun because he knew the best spots. This is a Turbot, also known as Trigger Fish, but we call them Turbots on the islands. They are tasty fish, whether grilled, fried, or stewed.

The skin of the Turbot is very tough; island ladies used to use it to scrub their floors, which shows just how tough it is. The meat is moist and delicious. Often on Saturdays, we would go fishing, diving, or riding in the boat, depending on the weather. We had a trusty little Boston Whaler that served us well. 🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸
