We planted crabgrass in our pastures. While many people think of it as a w**d, crabgrass is actually an excellent summer forage for cattle in the Southeast.

It is highly adaptable to a variety of soil types, from sandy soils to heavier clay, and thrives during the hottest months when other grasses slow down. For our weanlings, it provides high quality forage during a stage when their caloric demands are increasing as they frame out and put on muscle before moving to next stage of our finishing program.

Sometimes part of the cost of cheap food is hidden through subsidies that make food appear cheaper than it really is. Sometimes it’s absorbed by producers operating on razor thin margins.

In 2019, our family farm was facing foreclosure. On paper, it would have been easier to walk away. Instead, my husband and I left our careers, moved home, and started rebuilding the farm.

Through that experience, I’ve learned how fragile agriculture can be. Many farms are only one drought, one market downturn, or one bad year away from being forced to sell.

And when farmland gets sold today, it rarely stays farmland.

Around here, it becomes subdivisions, warehouses, data centers, and other development.

Right now, America is losing roughly 2,000 acres of farmland every day.

Cheap food is never truly cheap. The true cost is always paid somewhere.

We’re working every day to make sure our farm isn’t one of those acres.

Not everyone gets the opportunity to help save their family farm. What a privilege it is that this became my story.

In 2019, I received a phone call from my father that changed the course of my life. The farm was in financial trouble, and there was a very real possibility that our family could lose land that had been part of our family for generations.

My husband and I left our careers, moved back home, and committed ourselves to keeping this farm in agriculture. To make that possible, we had to reinvent the business. We began selling our beef directly to consumers and later launched our tallow skincare line to create another source of income for the farm.

I will always be grateful for the opportunity to come home and fight for our farm. Grateful that this land is still in agriculture. And grateful for every customer who has helped make that possible.

This was almost the story of our farm…When my father called and asked if I wanted to take over the family farm, I almost said no.

On paper, it didn’t make sense. The operation was struggling, the debt was overwhelming, and the easier choice would have been to stay in finance and walk away from it.

But instead of saying no, I said yes.

My husband and I left our careers, moved back home, and decided to fight for this land. Nearly seven years later, we’re still here because of that decision.

To make the farm profitable again, we had to reinvent the business. We moved away from the traditional cow-calf model and went direct-to-consumer. We now raise and finish our cattle here, then ship our beef straight to families across the country.

In 2023, we launched our tallow skincare line to bring in additional income and support our goal of keeping this land in agriculture.

It hasn’t been an easy road. But when I think about what could have happened if I’d said no, I know our farm might have become another statistic. Another family farm lost alongside the thousands that disappear across America every year.

Instead, we’re still here. Still farming. Still fighting for the future of this land.

Earlier this year burned this old cutover tract. Last year, the cattle had no interest in foraging here, but this year, following the burn, they chose this tract over one of our established pastures.

The goal is to help restore this area into a savanna structure for wildlife habitat restoration. The cattle benefit from the forage and the land benefits from the disturbance created by large herbivores.

We currently only have availability remaining on two processing dates for the first half of the year.
