"Follow The Tomato" is a moniker for the Center for Land-Based Learning's Community Food Program. The Community Food Program has four priority areas.

Fresh, local produce on the move. 🍅 Center for Land-Based Learning's Mobile Farmers Market brings affordable produce directly to communities throughout Yolo and Sacramento county. The Community Food Program addresses food access challenges by connecting farmers and community members. You can "Follow The Tomato" to our Mobile Farmers Market in West Sacramento and Woodland; to our Riverfront Urban Farmstand in the The Bridge District of West Sacramento; to our Community Food Ambassador program of local food advocates; and to our Food Hub on West Capitol Ave. in West Sacramento. Our program's collective goal is to build a stronger local food system in Yolo County by offering outreach opportunities to engage urban farmers and local residents.

Busy week on the Mobile Farmers Market, and we’ve got a few stops you won’t want to miss.

Wednesday, October 14: Live cooking demo at Aggie Square
Chef Santana Diaz and the UC Davis Health Nutrition Services team will be cooking up their Butternut Squash Maple Soup recipe from 12 – 12:30 p.m. Stop by to watch, and shop fresh, local produce while you’re there. Market hours are 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 4480 2nd Ave, Sacramento.

Saturday, October 17: Harvest & Health Festival
Looking for something to do this weekend? Find us at City Church, 3860 4th Ave, Sacramento, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. This one is a special stop, so come say hi!

Sunday, October 18: Mesa Mercado
For our Carmichael neighbors, we’ll be at 6241 Fair Oaks Blvd from 9 – 11 a.m. Grab brunch and fresh produce for the weekend!

Fall weather calls for soup. Join us at Aggie Square on Wednesday, October 14, for a live cooking demo featuring Chef Santana Diaz and the UC Davis Health Nutrition Services team.

They’ll be making Butternut Squash Maple Soup, a warm, simple recipe that’s easy to recreate at home. We’ve put the full recipe in the graphic, so save it and pick up your squash, onions, and herbs at the truck.

Bridge District, we’re back tomorrow! The Mobile Farmers Market truck will be at Riverfront Farm on Saturday, October 10, from 9 – 11 a.m.

We’re right across the street from Franquette and next to Drake’s Barn. Stop by our urban farm, take a look around, and fill your bag with fresh, local produce for the week ahead. This week’s truck has fall favorites like honeynut and spaghetti squash, French butter pears, and apples, along with the last of the heirloom tomatoes.

Say hello to Lola Lewis, one of five UC Davis interns joining us this quarter!

Lola is a second-year International Agricultural Development major. The interns are here for 10 weeks through the UC Davis class Plants, People, and the Planet, where each student completes a project with their host site. Lola’s project is GIS mapping of our farm and hedgerows, including the locations of native plants and boxes. One of our previous interns started the map, and Lola will be documenting more of it for each cropping system.

She’s working with Kyle and Mel. Nonprofits and agriculture drew her to the internship, and she hopes to get a better sense of careers in agriculture, conservation, and local food systems. She isn’t sure what comes after college yet, but she knows she wants to do something that helps people and ties into sustainability, agriculture, and global work.

Her favorite part so far? “Peaceful mornings at the farm harvesting, and trying new vegetables like okra!”

You might spot her on the Mobile Farmers Market truck, so don’t be shy and say hi.

There are some new friendly faces on the Mobile Farmers Market truck! 👋

Yasmin Zavala joined CLBL in June as Program Coordinator for our Urban Ag Internship and is now stepping into a full-time role split between UAI and the Mobile Farmers Market. She spent the past two years with the California Climate Action Corps, leading composting and garden education at an elementary school in Novato.

Melissa Obedoza joined us in September as our full-time Farm & Market Assistant. She comes from two years in climate action work, most recently with Stockton Service Corps, where she led urban greening and food recovery projects. Melissa is passionate about food sovereignty and urban agriculture, and she loves connecting with community members at every stop.

What's on the truck in October?

The season is shifting, and the truck is shifting with it. We're holding onto the last of summer's tomatoes, while fall's first squash, pears, and greens start to take over.

On the truck: heirloom and Roma tomatoes, honeynut and spaghetti squash, French butter pears, rainbow chard, Gala and Granny Smith apples, blackberries, blueberries, beets, eggplant, okra, bitter melon, and so much more.

A few ways to use it:
🍅 Roast the last of the tomatoes down into a sauce to freeze for winter
🎃 Roast spaghetti squash and toss with sautéed chard and garlic
🍐 Slice French butter pears onto a salad with beets and blue cheese
🍎 Bake apples with cinnamon for an easy fall dessert

Summer and fall are overlapping on the Mobile Farmers Market truck this week 🍅🍂

Heirloom tomatoes and blackberries haven't left yet, and the first winter squash and pears have arrived. It's a short window, so it's a good week to stock up on both.

Here's a look at what's on the truck: heirloom and Roma tomatoes from Durst Organic Growers in Esparto, French butter pears from Stillwater Orchards in Courtland, rainbow chard and Red Russian kale from Yanez Farms in Davis, Gala and Granny Smith apples from Mt. Moriah Farms in Lodi, blackberries from Medina Berry Farm, and blueberries from L.O.V Farms LLC. From our own Maples Farm, look for honeynut squash, Italian basil, and cherry tomatoes. Healthy Route Farm is bringing eggplant, okra, bitter melon, and gandana. And there's so much more.

Our Mobile Farmers Market has been bringing fresh, local, sustainably-grown produce to food insecure neighborhoods across the Yolo and Sacramento regions since 2021. According to a 2023 Yolo Food Bank report, nearly one in three Yolo County residents face food insecurity — our farmers market on wheels exists to close that gap, making fresh fruits and vegetables affordable and convenient while connecting small and beginning farmers with new customers.
