Today turned into a race against the radar trying to beat the rain and keep our sweet corn planting schedule on track here at Fleming Farm. We got another block planted just in time before the weather rolled in across western PA.

This planting is a brand new variety for us called “Cosmic” from Rupp Seeds and we’re excited about this one. Cosmic is an improved supersweet bi-color sweet corn with:
• excellent eating quality
• large 8”+ ears
• strong plant health
• multigenic rust resistance
• strong tolerance to northern corn leaf blight

Rupp also noted during trials that Cosmic stood out for both yield and “five-star flavor,” which definitely caught our attention.

Now we wait on sunshine and growing weather 🌱

🌽 We’d like your honest opinion! 🌽

Over the past few years, the cost of producing sweet corn has continued to rise — seed, fertilizer, fuel, labor, equipment repairs, packaging, and more.

At Fleming Farm, we work hard to continue growing high quality local sweet corn right here in West Sunbury for our community, while also keeping the farm sustainable for the future.

We want to hear directly from YOU:

💬 What do you personally feel is a fair price for a dozen ears of fresh local sweet corn?

Comment below and let us know your thoughts. We truly appreciate the feedback and support from everyone who shops local and supports our farm each season.

Thank you for supporting local agriculture! 🌽

Many people reached out concerned about our first sweet corn planting when those freezing nights showed up. Fair question — but here’s the part most people don’t get to see behind the scenes of farming.

Sweet corn seed in the ground is very different than sweet corn that has already emerged above the soil.

When we planted our first field of our popular Eden white super sweet corn, it was a calculated decision based on soil conditions, forecast trends, and crop timing — not just a gamble. Seed underground is naturally insulated by the soil. Even when air temperatures drop hard overnight, the soil temperature changes much slower. That protection matters.

The real danger comes after emergence, when the growing point and young leaves are exposed above ground. At the stage we were in, the corn had not emerged yet — it was still safely underground doing its job.

Today we checked the field and found exactly what we hoped to see: no emergence yet, but the seed has sprouted and is pushing. That means the planting is alive, progressing, and right on track. 🌱

This is why farming is more than “plant it and hope.” Every early planting is a balance of risk, timing, experience, and weather data. Plant too early and you can lose it. Plant too late and you miss valuable early harvest windows. The goal is making smart moves — not perfect guesses.

We love sharing this process because it helps everyone see what goes into getting that first ear of sweet corn ready for your table.

We’ll keep posting updates as this first planting grows. The season is underway.

We’re officially getting the 2026 season rolling 🌱

Ground prep is underway today as we get ready to plant our first sweet corn of the year. We’re starting off strong with our most popular variety — Eden White Super Sweet Corn 🌽

This is the one everyone waits for… incredible sweetness, great texture, and always a customer favorite.
