This rabbitry started because I couldn't stand an empty building.
I had a pet raccoon. She was genuinely my baby before I had my own. My husband put a lot of work into her outside setup even though she only tolerated him on the best days. She passed suddenly in early February and I just couldn't leave that space empty. It was a constant reminder that such an impactful little creature, one I'd hoped to have around for years, just wasn't there anymore.
We'd had rabbits before, I even showed a pet rabbit twice in 4H. They were all mutts and just not fitting into our plans at the time, so we decided to take a break from rabbits and try other things (like surprising my husband with a baby raccoon). Then I came across a Champagne d'Argent trio on Facebook and something just clicked. We still had all the supplies, the space was sitting there, and it felt wrong not to do something with it.
So here we are. I'm hoping to learn more about the show side of raising a dual purpose rabbit breed and we will see how things go from here.
*the raccoon was purchased from a breeder and we had the required permits*
