Today was hard.
We have been working day and night to finish projects and set up the farm for our upcoming Easter Festival. Every day we also do some field work in the strawberries. With the incoming temperature drop, we had to pause Easter projects and cover our strawberries.
We’ve had a tough strawberry season so far. Two weeks ago, we had a night where the forecast was close to freezing and we rolled the dice and decided not to get all the row cover out because we had just spent two hours packing it up…
Wrong decision. 🙃
It got cold enough to zap every single flower and young strawberry on our plants. So, we lost thousands of young berries and it set our picking season back a few weeks.
Fast forward to today, the forecast is showing two nights of below freezing temperatures and we decided we aren’t taking the risk this time. The plants are SO CLOSE to being ready to open for picking!
So we drug all of our row cover back out and covered the plants just before the wind really picked up.
Well, we had to take a break to go to our son’s baseball game and while we were there, we felt the wind gusts picking up drastically and all we could think about was whether or not we had secured the row covers enough before rushing to his game.
We didn’t.
We came home to find all the labor-intensive work of pulling out and sandbagging the row cover, was basically blown back off. Now, we had to recover them, with the added challenge of dust and 30 mph gusts.
We struggled, worked tirelessly, and even used our children as temporary “weights” as we moved around and fixed the row covers. 😬
The plants are tucked in tight and let’s pray this cold doesn’t affect them too much… we’ve got berries that will be ripe and ready for picking this week if they hang in there!
Strawberries are the most labor intensive thing we’ve ever grown… but the most rewarding too. We can’t wait to see y’all picking & enjoying these berries that we’ve worked so hard to plant, care for, and grow!
Hopefully we will see you later this week once this crazy Texas weather flips to record high temps! 🍓🤏🤠
P.S. go watch our “stories” right now for some good content of the day’s adventure 🙃
