Don’t know about you, but I’m getting fed up with the persistent media-fueled narrative surrounding discrimination. We’ve all been subjected to some form of discrimination during our lives. As a young boy, it was my dream to become a Cosmonaut. Owing to my age, ethnicity, and US citizenship, my access to the Russian space program was systemically blocked. It was a hard reality for me to accept. Did I cry? Probably. But instead of wallowing in self-pity and blaming the government, my parents, or unfair social barriers for holding me apart from the career of my dreams, I played the hand I was dealt and pivoted to my backup plan of becoming a fireman. Looking back, I can honestly say the discrimination I suffered has proved to be more gift than curse, no doubt providing a far richer life experience than I would have enjoyed as a Russian spaceman living under an oppressive communist regime. Discrimination is part of life. Get over yourselves, people!
