Stepping Steady Farm

Stepping Steady Farm We started this homestead with a goal to raise and produce as much of what we use as possible.

Married since 1993, this little farm is our 'next chapter' and we hope to maintain this lifestyle well into our old age together.

We have been learning about permaculture and following several of the principles. The attached pdf has been a guiding document on our journey towards growing food in a more natural, sustainable way.

We started two fruit tree guilds a few years ago and have seen bumper crops in our plum and peach trees since they’ve been part of guilds.

Anyone looking for already colored eggs for Easter? I have several regular dozen along with a few trays of 30 eggs.

I also have duck eggs! Mike and I had duck egg omelets this morning and they were fantastic!

We water glassed 217 eggs in a five gallon pail already and are gathering for the next batch.

Plus we have 56 eggs in the incubator currently, all either from our blue birchen marans rooster crosses, the silverudds rooster crosses, and our pure bred blue / blue splash English Orpingtons.

If you’ve got extra egg cartons laying around I’d love to have them! Will take your empty ones and fill them up for you as well:)

Mike came up with an awesome idea for extra baby duck ponds while they’re popping out right now! He put a piece of rubber down and propped up the sides with wood.

They love it!!

He also found some small disc sleds to use, which work great as well! Just like that four more duck ponds:)

Our 3rd and 4th clutches came over the last three days from two or our last year’s trio of lilac barred hens.

Their hatch was not without some drama! Orchid was the first of the two moms to sit with Lilac a few days behind her. They are both first time mom’s so im not sure if Orchid was waiting for more to hatch or just unsure about bringing them out without her sister momma, but alas, momma Noodle ended up with at least 15-20 extra babies.

She was not excited as she was already a bit overwhelmed with her first large clutch. She did a stellar job of keeping a good eye on them over the last two days while Lila and Orchid were finishing up.

Today Corbi helped me to separate the three mom’s from all the babies and we sorted them out. We put the lilacs and their two clutches into the biggest outer pen with a large family house for them to nest in and will keep them in there for a few days.

(Let me tell you, NOT easy to have 20 or so little ducks up in your hooded sweatshirt! By the time I got to my destination they were inside pockets, crawling up into my armpits and popping out everywhere!!!). When the sort was all said and done we verified that the twin mommies have at least 32! It is hard to tell when they a conglomerous mob and moms hover over!!

Noodle and her brood of 24 have the entire back pen to themselves at the moment. Hopefully it will only take a few days for Noodle and her crew to get back to normal and for the two lilacs to establish rapport with theirs.

We’ve also determined that we have 14 more hens sitting!

We’re definitely going to be selling little ones at swaps throughout the summer. We will also be having lots and lots of Muscovy duck for butcher this fall!!! (We will have an order form available in a few weeks for folks to preorder quantities and preferences in cuts, innards and packaging.)

Also, a customer who bought 8 processed ducks from us last fall came by the farm today and said she wanted to come back this fall for ‘many more’. Such good meat!!!!

Our Muscovy hen, Noodle brought out her biggest clutch yet - looks like 24!!

Noodle was in our first ever Muscovy clutch hatched out on our farm in the spring of 2019. Sadly her mom was killed by a raccoon while the clutch was hatching so she was raised by us first time Muscovy parents at the time.

She’s tried having clutches every year, the first two years in a row choosing a corner of the garage (right by the door) and then choosing a dog house in the front yard (only hatched one baby - Solo, who ended up raising herself because Noodle kept trying to hatch more).

This year she actually picked a real nest box! Today she brought out her clutch and is our second hen to hatch out this year.

We have 4 more hens on nests that are ready to go in the next two weeks and 8 more hens have started sitting on nests within the last few weeks. It is a later start than we’d prefer but it took spring a while to get here and even longer for the ladies to get interested in brooding.

We love baby ducks on the farm!!

Muscovy drake, 2 years old, proven father.

5 Muscovy hens all hatched last summer - 2 black barred, 2 chocolate, 1 looney (dark ripple and barred).

These birds are free ranged everyday and go into a shed at night. Our Muscovy moms do all the work when it comes to incubating and hatching the babies. The ladies are ready for their own flocks this year.

English Orpington hatching eggs.

Rooster is beautiful, big bodied lavender, hens are 3 solid lavender, 1 lavender cuckoo, 1 lavender laced, 1 lavender splash and 1 lavender mottled.

(Note: There is a golden laced hen in the mix in the pics - she’s our best momma and is assembling her clutch and will be sectioned off into her own nursery area to raise up a clutch of these beautiful birds for our farm.)

Three English Orpington roosters hatched 10.8.22

Beautiful, big birds that will add size and color to your flock. We like this breed on the homestead for our meat birds because they are good foragers, they take excellent care of their ladies and babies, they are docile with people, and they fill out and dress nicely in as early as 5 months!

Colors available are Black, Blue/black, and Blue.

Happy Spring! We are in full spring mode on the farm and are pleased to offer

Fertile chicken hatching eggs from our three breeding pens: Silverudd's (Isbar) eggs (Silverudd breeding trio with solid blue rooster, solid blue hen and blue splash hen also available), olive egger eggs from a blue/black splash marans rooster in with 2 whiting true blue, 2 prairie bluebell eggers, 2 f1 olive eggers and three easter eggers and the last pen is our lavender english orpington rooster with our lavender ladies.

Four english orpington roosters, great sizes and colors, all hatched 10.8.2022, one is lavender, one is black split lavender, one is blue and one is blue /black. All would make excellent additions to your breeding program with their size and colors.

2 year old proven chocolate muscovy drake. Five muscovy hens, all will be a year this summer, one is a looney (dark ripple and barred), two chocolate hens and two black barred hens. Also have fertile muscovy eggs.

We get about 3 dozen eating eggs daily from our chickens. We have a large variety of birds that lay an array of colors and keep the egg baskets looking very interesting.

Additionally, we have processed chicken.

We are taking preorders for processed chicken, muscovy, and turkey for later in the summer as well.

Please PM me if you're interested in discussing.
