Château Lynch-Bages is a 1855 Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac that has been owned by the Cazes family since 1939. Its second w**e, Echo de Lynch-Bages, was first produced in 1976 under the name Château Haut-Bages Averous before taking its current name with the 2008 vintage. Today, both w**es reflect the character of the estate’s gravelly Pauillac terroir, with Echo offering a more approachable expression alongside the Grand Vin.

The Château Lynch-Bages 2023 Grand Vin is composed of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and was aged for 18 months in French oak, 75% of which was new. The Echo de Lynch-Bages 2020 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot and was the first Echo produced in the estate’s new w**ery, with 12 months of aging in one-year-old French oak. The Echo de Lynch-Bages 2023 is 55% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, aged for 14 months in French oak. Together, the three bottles offer a look at both the Grand Vin and the estate’s more approachable second w**e across different vintages.

Westhampton Fine W**e recently had the unique opportunity to visit Castello della Sala in Umbria, one of the historic estates of the Antinori family. Located just outside Orvieto, the medieval castle sits within a 600-hectare estate, 229 hectares of which are planted to vineyards. Built in 1350 by Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera, Castello della Sala was acquired by the Antinori family in 1940. Its vineyards range from 220 to 470 meters in elevation, with clay and calcareous soils rich in fossil shells and significant day-to-night temperature variation.

Castello della Sala is also closely associated with Renzo Cotarella, who joined the estate in 1979 at the age of 25. His work led to the creation of Cervaro della Sala in 1985, a Chardonnay and Grechetto blend and one of the first Italian white w**es to undergo malolactic fermentation and aging in barriques. Beneath the castle is a historic 16th-century cellar, where Cervaro della Sala and Pinot Nero della Sala continue to age.

Today, Castello della Sala produces six w**es: Cervaro della Sala, Pinot Nero della Sala, Bramìto della Sala, Conte della Vipera, San Giovanni della Sala, and Muffato della Sala. Together they represent the estate’s range of traditional and international varieties, from the Chardonnay and Grechetto of Cervaro to Pinot Nero, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Grechetto, Procanico, Pinot Bianco and Viognier, as well as the noble-rot affected varieties used for Muffato della Sala.

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli 2021 comes from the estate’s five-hectare Montosoli vineyard, one of Montalcino’s most renowned sites. Altesino was among the first producers to vinify Montosoli separately, beginning with the 1975 vintage, establishing the vineyard as one of the earliest recognized Cru expressions of Brunello di Montalcino.

Made entirely from Sangiovese, the w**e is aged for a minimum of two years in oak followed by at least four months in bottle. The estate describes a profile marked by floral aromatics, blackberry, pink pepper and balsamic notes, with a dry, warm palate and refined tannic structure. The 2021 vintage offers a particularly compelling opportunity to experience this historic expression of Montosoli.

Othello 2023, Napa Valley, is produced from the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, the site where Christian Moueix established Dominus Estate in 1983. Today, the 103-acre vineyard produces three w**es: Dominus, Napanook, and Othello, with each offering a distinct expression of its terroir. Othello is crafted by the Dominus Estate team as an accessible expression of this historic site.

The 2023 vintage is composed of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot, with 20% new French oak. A notably cool and wet growing season delayed harvest, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The resulting w**e is vibrant and earthy, with notes of purple plum and cacao, complemented by the brightness and expressive character for which Othello is known.

Penfolds Grange is a multi-vineyard Shiraz with an unbroken lineage dating back to the first experimental vintage in 1951. Officially recognized as a Heritage Icon of South Australia, Grange is crafted from fully ripe Shiraz sourced across South Australia’s leading w**e regions, with each vintage expressing the character of the growing season while remaining true to the Grange style.

The 2018 vintage earned multiple perfect scores and reveals blackberry, blackcurrant, fennel, anise, chocolate, custard, and wild raspberry with a long, evolving finish. The 2019 is fresh and balanced, offering blueberry and blue-black fruits with chewy tannins and vibrant acidity. The 2020 opens with maraschino cherry before transitioning to Black Forest cake, blackberry, black cherry, and velvety, integrated tannins. The 2021 shows aromas of dark fruit, chocolate, balsamic, sesame, and frankincense, followed by layers of black fruit, licorice, menthol, star anise, roasted quince, peppercorn, Worcestershire sauce, and chocolaty tannins.

Come in and see Corrado for a bottle of Cipriani Bellini to celebrate International Bellini Day!

International Bellini Day is June 23rd each year. It was established by the Cipriani family, creators of the original Bellini at Harry’s Bar in Venice, and the first official celebration was held in 2025.

The Bellini itself was created by Giuseppe Cipriani at Harry’s Bar around 1948, made from white peach purée and Prosecco.

Napanook is made exclusively from grapes grown at the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, a site whose history dates back to 1838 when George Yount planted some of Napa Valley’s first grapevines. Dominus Estate was established on the property by Christian Moueix in 1983, and today the vineyard remains entirely dry-farmed, allowing the vines to draw deeply from the land’s gravelly and clay-loam soils.

The 2018 Napanook reflects the estate’s philosophy of minimal intervention and restraint in both the vineyard and cellar. Produced from carefully selected vineyard blocks chosen for their lively fruit, soft tannins, and early-maturing character, the w**e offers a bold yet approachable expression of the site. According to the estate, Napanook is known for its exuberant fruit, smooth structure, and medium-bodied texture, making it enjoyable in its youth while retaining the ability to age gracefully for more than a decade.

In 2012, the w**ery introduced the now-iconic black-and-white label design, giving Napanook a distinctive identity among Napa Valley w**es. While Dominus Estate is closed to the public, the vineyard continues to produce three w**es from this historic property: Dominus, Napanook, and Othello. The 2018 vintage stands as a compelling expression of one of Napa Valley’s most significant vineyard sites and the enduring vision of Christian Moueix.
