Texas A&M researchers specializing in pasture mealy bugs reviewed hay cutting video and confirmed we did have pasture mealy bugs, but because vegetation was tall and lush, bugs did not survive due to lack of moisture and zero air circulation. Life cycle is 14 days and “smoky dust” shows the ones in this patch were dead.⁣
At a different hay patch, 4 brown circles presented 2 weeks ago - the start of an infestation occurring after hay had been cut and baled, leaving short vegetation. We had patch sprayed to prevent additional loss, and the 4 brown circles have since greened out again.⁣

Smoke? . . . No. Dust? . . . No.
Pasture mealybugs being macerated by the cutter? . . . Yes!!!
No obvious signs of them prior to cutting yet the dust is from them going through the cutter.
They presented in another hayfield - we had it sprayed and progression was arrested. 🙏
