Happy February everyone! Just wanted to post a quick update.
If you've driven by the farmstand lately, you've probably noticed we have not yet dug it out from all of the snowstorms! The girls are still on a break from laying, so we still unfortunately don't have any eggs.
The good news is that we're getting more and more eggs every day, and the girls are even coming out of their coop and hanging out in the sunshine on these "warm" days!
We also have *double* the amount of hens that we had last year, so we are hoping to be able to stay in stock longer.
We are hoping to re-open by March and be back up to full egg capacity by April. Stay tuned here.
If you're looking for chicks or hatching eggs, stay tuned, I'll have an update on that in the next few days π£

Also, if you're curious about why we're getting less eggs right now:
Hens slow down laying when they go into their annual molt, because it takes so much energy for their bodies to regrow all of their feathers. They also slow down laying when daylight hours reduce.
We could have used supplemental light to push production, but this year, the earlier than usual extreme cold spells hit at the same time as our girls were molting, so we made the decision to shut off all supplemental light and allow them to use 100% of their energy for staying warm and regrowing their feathers :)
Thanks for your patience!
