For want of a nail" is a proverb, having numerous variations over several centuries, reminding that seemingly unimportant acts or omissions can have grave and unforeseen consequences through a domino effect.

This proverb came home to me today when I discovered that little Marigold had died in the night.

After raising sheep for 34 years I still have a love/hate relationship with sheep blankets. On the one hand they can keep your sheep’s fleeces cleaner especially over the winter when you are feeding hay. But they are labor intensive as the blanket you put on in the fall becomes too tight in the winter causing injuries by too tight leg bands, or become too loose and the sheep gets tangled in leg bands that slipped off or got tangled on something. And then there are all the rips that inevitably occur that need mending. Every day sheep need to have their blankets checked and readjusted.

Over the years I have had near misses that I caught in time, but today it was too late for Marigold.

Because a nail was sticking out of the barn wall her blanket got caught on the nail. Because the blanket got caught on the nail she struggled and got her leg band twisted around her leg. Because her leg band was twisted around her leg and she continued to struggle to free herself she fell. And because she fell on her back on a slope in the barn she casted and died.
Less than a year old and perfectly healthy she died because a nail sticking out caught on her blanket.
This is a lesson about the vigilance every shepherd needs-to look at every sheep every day and if using blankets making sure they fit perfectly. And look for all those little hazards like nails sticking out, extension cords that can be tripped on and loose baler twine that sheep can get entangled in. And so much more…
We will really miss you Marigold. I am so so sorry.

Currently 10 degrees here with wind chill making it -3 degrees. Heavy snow.
Getting ready to make my way up to the barn.
On the dog front, Muffin loves this deep snow. Dot thinks it is better to hide under the deck…,

Dot had her last checkup with the surgeon and the x ray showed that her leg is completely healed and the examination showed she has full range of motion! Yay!
The vet said all restrictions are lifted and she can do whatever she wants. Wait I said, she has to clear that with her parents!
Anyway we came home and my husband immediately dismantled the playpen.
Today is Dot celebration day and we are taking her for a nature walk! Her first walk in 2 1/2 months!!!

Dot’s surgery went well but now it will be a long recovery. 8 weeks of restricted movement hence the dog playpen and two weeks with the cone. She had a badly broken leg involving two bones so needed a metal plate and screws. Also broken ribs and bruised lungs. She is being so brave.

Please keep our precious little Dot in your thoughts and prayers. She was hit by a car Sunday and has been in the hospital since then. She is now breathing on her own and so they will do surgery tomorrow. These dogs fill up so much space in our hearts!

Today was a sad day at BlackBerry Fields Farm. I made the difficult decision to let Velvet go. It became increasingly difficult for her to walk and graze. As shepherds we must make decisions based upon what is humane and not allow the sheep in our care to suffer pain. It is better not to wait until it’s a crisis. But it is still hard when the time comes even know you know it is the right decision.
Velvet and her twin Lacey were born to Lorelei 14 years ago. Lorelei was a rescue sheep we took in with a broken leg that mended badly without medical care. She walked on 3 legs and rested on the fourth knee. She gave us three lambs, a single ewe lamb and then twin ewe lambs.
She was a feisty brave little ewe that lived a long life. When her twins were born we decided not to breed her again since it was a lot of weight for a sheep on three legs.
Velvet was inky black and Lacey was snowy white. Lorelei took one look at Lacey and rejected her. She had never had a white lamb and thought it couldn’t be her’s!
Velvet though was nursed and mothered well and grew up to be one of our sweetest ewes. Her soft curls changed from inky black to a myriad of natural colors as she aged and she was always docile and enjoyed being cuddled.
These last three months she loved having Maisie’s lambs Marigold and Mango snuggle up to her on rainy days.
Now she has gone to join Lacey and Lorelei and the three of them walk and graze in a place without pain.
Forever in my heart.

It has been a wet, wild and wonderful MD Sheep and Wool Festival so far this weekend. Today was warm and sunny with big crowds and then suddenly the black clouds rolled in and the heavens opened with torrential thunderstorms and hail like I have never seen. The noise was deafening. And then the water flowed into the barns and combined with the wind and rain many vendors were left standing in water and mud and with wet merchandise. I have never seen an inch worth of hail in the barn like that before. Several vendors in my barn alone packed up and left.
The good news before this event was we had a lot of wonderful people stop by our booth to talk wool and sheep and spinning and spindles.
A lovely woman stopped by to let me know that the yarn she bought from me last year was knit up
into a lovely lace cowl that won first place for an item made from MD wool!
And then this lovely gentleman and his brother both won awards for their beautiful fleeces. A big round of applause and a bag of apples for Hendrick and Hans! Just got to love East Friesians for their wool and for their lovable personalities.
And tomorrow is another day. Brave the weather and visit me in Barn 4, space 5!
