This little dude was in the rain water that pooled at the lower end of the grain trough. I'm fairly certain that goats don't enjoy frog legs but then again, I've been wrong before.

Why is this infomation important? Because it chanes and affects how many farms are managing their flocks. FAMACHA and body condition score alone are poor indicators for whether an animal needs to be dewormed according to recent studies by MSU and Tufts.

If you've missed my Best Practices for Parasite Management workshop, FAMACHA training workshop or the latest DIY F***l Egg counting workshop, please reach out as I'm working on dates for a July / August workshop series.

Topics that we cover in the workshop series:
The parasites themselves
What is FAMACHA, body condition scoring and the Five Point Check.
Best practices for grazing and pasture management to reduce parasite exposure.
What is a f***l egg count.
How can you use f***l egg count data to manage your flock and breeding program to produce resilient OR resistant animals.
What is a resistant or resilient animal?
How do I know if my dewormer is effective?
How do I use a microscope?
How do I identify a parasite?
What is hypobiosis?
What is a periparturient egg rise?
What is refugia?
When should I run a f***l sample?
What and how do I perform a McMasters test?
When should I deworm my sheep or goats?
And much more.....

It's going to be awfully hot dining alfresco this week for a few of these girls who still insist on wearing some of their winter coats.

This goat has "politely declined" grooming in the past but shear change her mind about it this week 🤣

This is Gertie.

She's borderline a free-loader in most people's eyes but don't tell her that.

She was born a little premature and was pretty small and she is still pretty tiny for a Boer but her personality is big! I would be surprised if she weighed more than 60 or 70 pounds. And she's got the shortest little legs.

She's still here because she was too small for meat or breeding but she's an awesome embassador and teacher. She doesn't spook at most things and is pretty level headed. She looks at a situation and thinks about it before being a turd. She doesn't test the fence, even when there's no electricity and because of her size she's super portable, just like a small dog.

She truly excels in social situations with people so although she may not be a great "breed embassador", she's a great public school teacher and would probably be a 4-H mom in her spare time if she had two legs and opposable thumbs.

Goats love Multiflora Rose and we are often asked how can they possibly eat it with those thorns!?

They start by eating the longer, softer stemmed new growth and get that out of the way. Then they go in and grab what is closer to the main stem and the larger thorns. Smaller stems and thorns they will break off and eat but larger stems will get left behind.

DIY F***l Egg Counting Workshop!

Next Sunday, May 17th and Sunday, May 24th I am hosting a f***l egg counting workshop in Putney. Choose which Sunday works for you and let me know.

What we'll cover:
Basic microscope anatomy and use
When to use f***l egg counting
Why to use f***l egg counting
How to use (and NOT use) the data to help make decisions regarding your flock or herd.
How to collect and store samples.
And then we'll have a hands on workshop on how to run your own Modified McMaster F***l egg count!

There are still a limited number of spots available on either Sunday. $150 per person and this includes all the materials you will need for the workshop.

If you want to learn about Best Practices for Parasite Managment and FAMACHA, that is a different workshop and I'll be announcing more dates for that later.

Trimmed the flock at Maybelle Farm today.

I scoped out the fiber studio while I was there. Lots of great stuff there! Theres yarn, some natural and some dyed, needle felted items, and my personal favorites are the fleece lined mittens and socks. They also have gorgeous fleeces for sale. I highly recommend you check out the fiber studio the next time you're in the Wardsboro area.
