Our farm will not be participating in today’s public hearing, because quite frankly, this board of commissioners has wasted enough of our time playing politics. Their mind was made up on this issue before even hearing public testimony directly from farm-owners months ago. For the last 6 months, we have offered to sit down in-person for direct discussion, have offered balanced compromises that would take into account everyone’s concerns, and have offered fair solutions- all of which were meant with zero response from the commissioners. Instead, they have listened to the voices of a few homeowners (and campaign contributors) that didn’t want the view of OUR fields to be hindered from their backyard.

But make no mistake- we are not discouraged by their actions. We have a 100 year family farm history of resilience and we have faith in God’s plan for how to steward our land. That stewardship will not be decided by a small group of men with no integrity.

We have many other options and are excited for the future of our farmland. The county has shown their cards too early on how they will respect the heritage of farm ownership in Carroll County, and now we know the playbook.

Thank you to everyone who supported our plans to provide community solar on a portion of our farmland. We were hoping to help reduce your energy cost with clean-energy solutions while still farming under and around the solar instillation. Instead, your county commissioners stopped it.

Remember this in a couple of years and see ya at the polls.

On Thursday, the public will have one more chance to give their opinions about whether solar panel projects should be banned on farmland in Carroll County.

We are so excited to welcome Tejal to the farm as our first intern! She has been working alongside our family this summer helping in the garden, stacking firewood for campers, caring for the animals, prepping egg cartons for customers, and prepping stalls for more horses. Everyone welcome Tejal to the farm! ❤️

In our experience, most people in Carroll County dislike change, and that's understandable. But thankfully, change has come, and is coming to Carroll County (and other rural areas around the U.S.) but it involves dismantling systems of oppression, racist roots, and prejudice biases towards those from urban communities and diverse cultures/backgrounds. That's why we are proud to be a sponsor of this year's Carroll Citizens for Racial Equity 2023 conference! Registration is open now.

We’d like to publicly thank the neighbor who tried to file a complaint with the county against us for having a campsite on our farm. Hahahaha!! We were the ones who helped write the Agritourism bill for the State of Maryland, so the jokes on you, and it’s pretty funny 😂😂😂.

Our Story

Built in 1874, The Willet Family Farm has served as home for several generations of the Willet Family. Once known as “Sunnyside Farm”, “Willet View” and the location for the “Barnstorm Festival”, the farm was instantly recognizable by its large red barn, squeaky windmill, and daffodil fields. Everyone was always welcome on the property, and the thousands of guests that did visit left knowing the land as “sacred ground”.

The Willet Farm survived many hardships including The Great Depression, the 1999 tornado that destroyed the barn, and cancer that claimed the life of family members too early. In 2006, The farm had to be sold outside of the family, but in an effort to honor past generations and preserve the heritage of what the farm stood for (faith, family and hard work), the farm was purchased in 2017 by Jeremy Willet (Grandson of Robert Willet who grew up on the farm) & his wife, Kathleen Willet, placing it back into the Willet Family. The 13 acre farm is perfectly located in the middle of Sonshine Acres; over 50 acres of farmland owned now by Jeremy’s parents, and adjacent to farmland owned by cousins Jesse & Josh Willet.

On October 30th, 2017, the newly restored farmhouse burned down due to the improper installation of the fire-insert by a local company earlier that summer. What appeared as a major set-back to the vision of the farm, the family persevered believing the words found in Isaiah 43:19, “For I am about to do something NEW”, and began to rebuild in 2018.

In 2019, the new farmhouse was complete, along with a renewed commitment to create an inclusive environment where neighbors are invited to gather on a peaceful homestead with an organic community garden, pond and stream, pasture for small livestock, walking trails, campsite, and event space for experiences that inspire change through partnerships with local and global organizations.
