Long read but important for our future:

Alright this weather event is/was a ‘great’ test for our outside garden!
For years we’ve been practicing organic principles, with minimal tillage plus taking steps to increase the ‘organic matter’ in our soil!
This rain absorbed into the garden soil and into our pastures, rather than running off.
The places that used to have washouts or run offs, (washing away the top soil) are no longer there!
This is how significant it is for our pasture, see the topography of the farm, is a natural ‘water shed’ so when it rained, more than the soil could absorb, it would ‘run off’ and that run off made its way to our lower garden (a natural water shed)!
And we used to loose beds when we got those torrential rains!
But today it is not an issue!
No loss of top soil and very minimal damage to small plants, sure there’s debris blowing in so it looks messy but the soils health has improved greatly!

Think about this on an even larger scale, large farms, mono-crops that leave soil bare, tilling and when hard rains came, then that ‘run off’ would end up in the creeks and rivers, and the runoff of fertilizer & top soil will leave hard pan (not to mention contaminating our water supply)! Bare soil… hard as a rock!
Look back at our history with what happened at the Dust Bowl!

Good Morning!

Here’s a quick update on some lettuce! Looking beautiful, these will go into our high tunnel on Monday!
Started 9/11 in germination chamber, lights a lil heat and consistent watering then it’s just time!
So three weeks here and then four weeks in the ground!

And just like that….. plus w that cold front - to sweeten em up! We’re all in for a treat!

Blessings
