Good explanation of why most of our wines have some residual sugar. We complete taste trials on every wine after fermentation to determine what level of sugar provides the best mouth-feel and flavor experience.

MYTH vs. FACT: Sweet Wine

MYTH: Sweet wine is lower-quality wine.

FACT: Sweetness has nothing to do with quality.

A wine can be sweet, dry, semi-sweet, or anywhere in between and still be expertly crafted. Quality is determined by factors such as balance, aroma, flavor, structure, and the absence of faults, not simply by the amount of residual sugar.

In fact, many of the cold-hardy grape varieties grown throughout the Midwest naturally have bright acidity. Winemakers may choose to leave a small amount of residual sugar in the finished wine to create balance and enhance the wine’s fruit character.

Think of it like adding a squeeze of lemon to a recipe; you aren’t trying to make it sour, you’re creating harmony between the flavors.

Great winemaking is about balance.

Whether your favorite wine is dry, semi-sweet, or sweet, there’s room for every style at the table.

The best wine isn’t the driest wine, it’s the wine you enjoy drinking.
