Bear got put back in with the ladies this week to catch anyone that didn’t take in July. I’d say he’s happy. 😜

Plus, the ladies flocked to him immediately and were just as excited lol.

Pre-seasoning our eggs 😜

JK. But we do add a variety of herbs and seasonings to our chicken feed about 2-3 times a month! We add Paprika, Red Pepper Flakes, Garlic Powder and Parsley! Here is why:

🌶️ Paprika

Rich in carotenoids/antioxidants; may support skin/feather health and can contribute to deeper orange/yellow yolks.

🧄 Garlic powder

Contains sulfur compounds and antioxidants. It may have mild antimicrobial properties and can support general gut health, though it doesn’t replace dewormers or antibiotics when those are actually needed.

🌶️ Red pepper flakes

Provides capsaicin and antioxidants. Chickens don’t experience the same “hot” sensation mammals do, and small amounts may encourage appetite. There is some research into capsaicin and gut/parasite effects, but it’s not a proven parasite treatment.

🌿 Parsley

Provides vitamins and antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and carotenoids. It’s also a nice source of plant-based enrichment.

The more you know! 😊 I doubt the chickens laying the store bought eggs are getting this kind of special treatment. Just saying!

😞😞😞

Sadly, we lost all 5 kits between last night and this morning. I’m not sure if it’s cause Carrot was unprepared with originally not having her nesting box or what.. This is the first litter that Carrot has lost. 💔

It’s always even worse when the kiddos are home to witness. 🥺

Carrot, our New Zealand doe, was in with Helicopter, our Dutch buck, on August 30th, so I knew she was going to be due soon.. but this girl surprised us a little early without any warning! 😊 Most does’ gestational period is 30-32 days, so she dropped them a little early!

Did you know that when does are getting ready to birth that they start pulling out their belly hair? This helps keep her kits warm, as well as helps more easily expose her ni***es.

Well, Carrot didn’t pull out hair before birthing.. so I was surprised when I walked out to 5 kits roaming the cage without a nesting box! 🤪

Fortunately, we got the nesting box in with some straw, moved the kits and Carrot began pulling out hair today. So all is well! Can’t wait to see these babies grow! ❤️

Today was a sad day on the farm.

We had three ewes with prolapses that just were not staying in despite efforts and prolapse harnesses (busted out of their harnesses somehow most of the time), so we made the tough decision to cull these ewes and fill our freezer. 😕

We also had a ewe that developed some kind of neurological issue. She was super unbalanced and was brought to our barn. She was treated with Fenbendazole and Ivermectin (in case it was Meningeal worm like we had one in January) and Thiamine (in case it was polio). But sadly after 7 days of treatment, she did not make any improvement and was falling so hard that she busted her eye today. 😞

To own livestock is to own deadstock sometimes. We have been very blessed with our animals and days like these are never easy.

On a positive note, we did home this ram lamb to his next flock of ladies and he will be put to work in October. I’m excited to see what’s to come! ❤️
